go for the mb quart. i think the psd are the newer models. trust me you won't be dissapointed with mb quart. btw they too are made with bmw in mind. .....the're german speakers!!! just remember don't expect too much bass from any set of 5.25" speakers....unless you get a set of focals (the best speakers in the market period). if you want bass then you'll need a sub.

Thanks for the info. I will probably go with the cheaper set for front a rear and order the M5 subs to replace the Nokia box in the trunk. Don't need thumping bass, just more, and I can't sacrafice trunk space with sub enclosure.

true mb quarts are made in germany, what i meant to say is that a/d/s/ is a company founded by bmw enthusiasts who develop their products in bmw's. a/d/s/ even has bmw specific application manuals for their products.

here is a link for the e39 upgrade manual:

www.adst.com/pdfs/bmwe39.pdf

here is evosport's a/d/s pricelist to get an idea of prices:

www.evosport.com/product/mobile_elec/

focals are great speakers, i would personally vote dynaudio on par with focal. i have run a full focal set up and a full dynaudio set up and i prefer the dyns. they are a little warmer and work well with my mcintosh labs mx406 source and mcc404 amplifiers. focals subs are much better than dyns subs. i am currently running 2 alumapro alchemy 12s with dyns for front a rear stages in my suv, a great SQ set up. my 3er has a complete a/d/s/ set up, speakers, subs, amps, with a denon dct-z1 source. in the end speaker and electronics selection is all about preference, i would recommend auditioning, along with mb quart, focal, a/d/s/, and dynaudio, to see what is out there.

also, if you wanted to get silly spending money on mobile speakers you could go with another german brand, RS Sound, they run about 4k for a pair or BRAX, whose speakers run about 3k a pair.

Thanks for the response. I've seen the pdf from ADS before. I've emailed a few months back and they said they don't support systems with DSP and do not recommend anything related to DSP. I have not read anyone upgrading a current e39 DSP system other than using MB Quart speakers. My main focus is to upgrade the sound without losing the factory look and w/o losing trunk space.

ouch. yeah you have to avoid DSP as an option, if possible, if you want to upgrade your audio without hassles. it shouldn't matter with speakers, where DSP factors in is when you start to upgrade electronics (amplifiers and source units).

to get a better idea about upgrades check out some mobile audio forums or find an experienced local installer. Avoid large electronic mega-stores like tweeter and best buy. Yes it is convenient to get a car stereo installed in the same place you buy your toaster but you will end up with an installer who is far less experienced and knowlegable than one who deals more exclusively with high end cars and products.

it may sound silly but the best way to find a good installer is to go to the websites of some high end manufacturers and cross reference with their dealer locators to find an installer near by. i have moved around the country quite a bit for college and since graduation and it is how i get my bearings when i arrive in a new place.

check out these manufacturer's dealer listings:

www.mcintoshlabs.com
www.zapco.com
www.dynaudio.com
www.adst.com

here is a link for the best mobile audio forum, IMO. the link for forums is in the upper right of the main page.

Focal Utopia

I agree, the Focal Utopias are the best sounding speaker for a (semi) reasonable price. You can spend literally a few grand (Braxx) but for a set of seperates, the utopias sound phenomenal. I still like my boston 3 ways- I have always liked the overall roundness of Bostons- though I ended up using Quarts to restore factory look in my solara (went from my hand-made DIY fiberglass pods w/ 3-way boston 6.53s to stock door mount quart PSd 6.5 seperates) The bostons undoubtedly sound warmer and not quite as brash- Even with the pro tweets, which can be harsh, the quarts are more so.

Very interesting indeed. I'm planning on upgrading my 740's system soon, and that's also DSP-driven. This page might be of interest to you:

http://www.geocities.com/jyl087/dsp-analyzed.htm

Assuming your system is similar to mine, the crossovers in either pair you list will be useless. As such, you may want to shift your search to individual components instead of packages. It would be very interesting to gain access to the DSP crossover points, as you'd undoubtedly want to tweak those again after changing the speakers.

By upgrading the front 5 1/4" speakers you'll get much tighter midbass, which can add a lot to the overall bass sound even though you're not doing anything to the lower bass frequencies. Quart used to make an 8" midbass that was intended to fire directly into a trunk, but it looks like they stopped making that. I'm with you - don't want to lose any trunk space.

I haven't heard the Focals yet, but I will say that the JM Lab speakers for home systems are something else! Dynaudio is also an incredible home brand that I haven't heard the mobile options for (sheesh - I have to get out more!)
