Which car to get?

Since I found a job, in a few shorts months I will be getting a car, now I should be able to finance a car up to 20k, and for that I was thinking of two cars in particular. The BMW 540i sport or BMW M coupe. Both have drawbacks, the 540i is less power ( power to weight wise ) and has less sex appeal, but, it has four doors, and a lot of potential for exterior/ performance modding. While the M coupe, is a two seater, I often have friends in the car, but I just LOVE the way it looks, and the whole package you get is just plain awesome. So which would you guys get, considering I am a 18 year old. ( Note, this is my money that I earn, not spoiled, Im an experianced driver, and I need something fun and practical, these cars are it.)

I vote for the M Coupe because while you are young and single you can afford a two seater. Not to mention I do not believe they are going to devalue much compared to the 540. They made in compairson very few M Coupes!

thats true. i figured out why i changed my vote, i went to autotrader to see if you could actually score one for 20k, and the first one i clicked on had horrible pics and i became disgusted. i might abuse my mod powers and change my vote back sometime

M Coupe. Get it now, make it a lifetime keeper - it is going to be sooo classic. A little later pick up a Jetta for a beater car.

I would think you were driving your dad or mom's 540i, if you are in your 20 sth.

In NYC? I dunno... I'd be tempted by the coupe, but there would be too much temptation for a more roomier saloon given the surroundings.

I'd end up going with a 540i. And personally, I think an 18 year old in a 540i is (forgive me for saying it like this) "straight balla.'" A buddy of mine had a 540, and he dropped it a bit, put an M5 front bumper, and put some tasteful rims and it looked absolutely gorgeous. Plus there's....(clears his throat) more room in the back seat. 18, in that kind of car? You're gonna being trying on alot of "shoes."

Eric, why not, you have a 5.. haha. I went to a dealership in LI, they had a Dinan Imola Red
M coupe, goregeous, but at 25k a little much. I am 6' 3'' and I have like 3 inches of headroom in that car, its amazing. Gotta think hard.

Go for the 540i. You and I both know you'll have a real tough time with an M Coupe in NYC and when dealing with other people.

I vote M Coupe. Only cuz you're 18 tho. My personal favorite is the 540, but I'm several years older than you so my priorities have changed. I just think that if you can afford it, you should get the badass sports coupe while you can. 540 at your age just looks like you're driving your parents car.

Why not a 5? Big, heavy, gas guzzlers. They really are the epitome of bmw's, but I perfer the smaller 3er's.

True, but at least it looks more likely that his parents bought him a car and it actually is his rather then he took the keys to his dad's daily driver. If I'm gonna look spoiled (nothing really wrong with being spoiled to a certain extent), I'd rather it look like it's at least my car that was bought for me instead of me just borrowing my parent's car.

i love both cars its a tough choise i would probably go with the coupe only because tehy are fast! and i would preffer the faster more sporty car if it was me

Well, the thing is at my price range I can only afford the 240hp version, the 315hp 01's and 02's are out of my range, at 240hp the car is only slightly faster than a 540i. I love the look of the car, but that means one person at a time and that could lead to some troubles...

Is there any difference between a plain 540i sport and a 540i M pack and just a 540i premium? Ie suspension? or is it all just body kit differences.
