Coming home from buying my free red wings, and got behind a brand spanking new Black on black e60 M5. What a sick car.

The "what the hell" is becuase the person was driving it a constant 5 or 10 mph under the speedlimit on very secluded back roads, and taking turns much much much slower than most people would in a SUV, let alone an M5. Do they bodyroll that much or something? I was trying to egg them on but they didn't budge. I don't expect them to take off but geesh... why would you spend $90k on an M5 if you're going to drive it like that?! Buy a 530i or something. I was about to pass them at one point! [confused]

Maybe they were new owners and trying to get use to the car before opening her up. Maybe they just like to drive slow. Maybe they are the type who buy expensive fast cars and drive them slow to make all the Eric's in the world mad...hehe

Heh it didn't make me mad - but it agrivated me that he has 507 hp and one of the most technologically advanced suspensions in the WORLD, and he was driving it like a buick. It wasn't a matter of getting used to the car or not, it was pure slowness! Ahhhh! Maybe he wants to trade engines.

It's SMG bro....it lets all the people who don't want to drive stick or don't know how to drive stick, get an M car. There are enthusiasts like Scott (M Speed) who do drive stick well and opt for the SMG, but it seems like most people get SMG cuz they're too queer.

I see lots of new M5's in NYC, and in Jersey the other day, I saw an M6 sitting in a parking lot a couple of feet away from me...19" wheels wheels and quad pipe exhaust are amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's the same thing when I'm down in Palm Beach, FL....all these fools in an auto Porsche 911 constantly cruising.

All that being said, each person can drive however the F they want...at the very least, slow = safe.

Maybe the driver wasn't the owner of the car and wanted to make damn sure nothing happened to it while under their care.....

P.S. There are many reasons to purchasing a SMG equipped car. There is also a reason BMW decided to put the SMG III into one of the best Super Saloon's in the world. I know BMW knows what they are doing and trust in the decisions they chose.....

there isnt a manuel available yet, and the m5 in the sport mode suspention is nothing but hard and stiff and it handles really really well with no body roll, ive driven it thats how i know :D

and dont dog on the smg if youve never driven it, it is wonderful to drive, but not if your looking for an automatic tranny.

I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU MEAN!
I was driving to pick up a good friend of mine from LIU and on one of the roads I see a CLS55 AMG, when he moves off from the light this guy was doing 40 in a 50.. I had to sit on his ass, so that he gets out of the way, I look to the side and its some 60 year old guy driving. I dont see the point for a person that old having nearly a 500hp car.

Well it sure wasn't smg - the guy's license plate was "SIX SPED" maybe he was just out cruising.
Well then he should change the plate because the SMG has 7 gears and the 6-speed manual ain't out yet.

SMG II on the M3 just isn't as good as BMW and everybody else says it is.

The best automatically-operated manual transmission I've ever seen is the DSG transmission in the new VW GTI. It is SO simple and works SO well. I have no idea how SMG III is, but it puts SMG II to shame.

I really hope Porsche uses the DSG transmission to replace the available automatic transmission for the 911 and Boxster.

Automatics of today will be gone in another 10 or 20 years for the more reliable and stronger sequential gearboxes, and of course the new transmission designed by bmw, gm, and Toyota (?) that is completely variable. This is much better since there will be no mechanical loss of power from a hydraulic torque converter.

Lol dude what are you talking about? CVT and sequential manuals are still brand-spanking-new, they're barely proven themselves on road cars. In the meantime, regular automatic transmissions are starting to pull in faster 0-60 times and better fuel economy figures than all of them.

Sequential transmissions have been around nearly as long (if not longer?) than the transmissions we use in cars every day. But that isn't the point, power steering wasn't tried and proven when GM/Ford/Chrysler started using it...
