What have I done!?

I started messing around and going through the "Hidden OBC Codes" through the instrument cluster and accidentally used function #21 and RESET my functions! [80?] My car was running and all gauges/lights zeroed out and obviously reset. The clock was showing dashes, but nothing else seems to be out of whack. I'm really hoping my stupidity didn't cause any harm or interfere with any engine diagnostics. Have I lost speedo, tach, fuel accuracy? or just everything the car has analyzed up to now.? I'm concerned I need to go to the dealer and have them properly calibrate everything back to specs, since I reset the damn thing! I'm started to learn not to play with any 'secrets' or modify anything that isn't broken! I must say function #2 (cluster check)is really sweet! Please advise me of the current state my vehicle is in!! [scratch]

You might want to drain the oil, coolant, brake fluid, etc. and then refill/bleed them. The level sensors could be messed up. Make sure to reuse the old stuff, since you already know it's compatible with your car.

Lol, epj3.

Seriously though, everything is fine dude. The car wouldn't let you mess anything up such as speedo/rpm calibration and stuff. Think about it....you'are nervous and freaked over hitting a reset button.....do you think BMW would let YOU be able to change technical settings that affect the operation of the car? Certainly not!

It only resets the OBC....navigation will keep its time...basically the tripo is reset, and the mpg readings. Not a biggie!

Long time no see, EPJ3....where have you been!?!

Around, doing really technical things that most people here wouldn't understand like the power lock hoses in my doors [clap] [fake]

a little relieved,, but with all the information contained in the OBC, the reset only effects the trip and mpg readings? It's hard to beleive that. If BMW wanted us to access those functions then it would have been in the OM. That's why I was concerned that I reset something I should have known nothing about.

It's OK - really. Like the others said, calibration isn't stored in user resetable memory. The reset function you used is more like a self test diagnostic routine, and could be used in the unlikely event that the display's CPU got scrambled. Such as when you are less than 500 feet away from a nuclear detonation.

Well not all 3 series even have the OBC...E46's all do in the US...maybe all E46's now come standard with the OBC worldwide, I'm not sure. But you're only talking about the few functions that the OBC does (those few you toggle through with the stalk). That's my understanding and what I've noted when I've reset mine before. You're not resetting the engine management module/computer or anything like that.

aNoodle,
I'm not talking about the few functions on the stalk. I'm referring to function #21 reset accessed through the hidden OBC codes. ie: hold trip/reset button for 5 sec., go to funtion #19 and unlock all funtions. Have you not heard of this? BTW, thanks for all the replies, i'll continue driving as usual. No side effects yet [:o)]

lol, I just realized that I have OBC too but I still don't know how to use it, so what's the purpose of OBC? please explain, does it make a car drive better?
Oh lordy.........here we go. Please guys, I love reading about how much you love your cars, don't go jackin' them up now messing with the secret codes and stuff. If you were supposed to be playing with those codes..........they wouldn't be "secret"[whip]
