I have a 91 318is and have been very happy with it. They are not the power house that my M roadster or 750iL are, but they are fun cars. I have a Confortti chip in the car, a Dinan CAI and suspension. The car is a great track and road car and handles like it is on rails. If you can afford the little extra, I would go with the 325is, if not the 318 is a great car.

I can move it to the General Chat if you'd like. The 325 is better in that you are starting with a motor that has decent power. The BMW four cylinders although very reliable are not "strong" at the lower end. The BMW 6's have always been strong motors. Example, the price of a "chip" for the 318 and 325 are the same, the power gain with the 325 is more, thus more bang for the buck. If you just want the 318 get it there is nothing wrong with it.

Holy crap dude, you could DEFINITELY get a NICE 325is for about 5 - 9k!!

I bought my great-condition 325is for $3700 with 165,000 miles on it... runs perfectly fine. No weird noises, no rust, paint is in near perfect condition except for the stone chips you'd expect from a 16 year old car.

For 6 or 7k, you should be able to find a low mileage good condition, if not just repainted, 325is.

The only problem with the e30 M3 is that they are getting old, meaning that the mileage is getting up there. If you have to rebuild an e30 M3 your looking at 10k. So unless you get a fantastic deal, or pay a premium price to get a low mileage one it could get expensive.

To answer your question the M42 motor, 4 cyl in the 91 318is is very reliable, but dollar for dollar I'd get the 325is if I could.

I still agree with big daddy. An e30 m3 would be super sweet if you can restore it and make it in new condition, but otherwise, speaking practically, the 325is would be the best one to look for.

i did a seartch for 325is, and all i got was like 2 chrome bumper models in my area (88 or older right?) they seem so rare. If i get a BMW, i want the plastic bumpers, they look so much better.

I did a search for 318is and i got a ton, i might just have to settle with a 318i. I think i will be okay with that. Maybe for my performance kicks, i'll buy a 2nd gen rx-7 and supe up its rotary engine. Rotary's are the shizzle.

I've driven my friends 318is back to back with my E30 M3 and two things I really noticed. One was that his engine feels a lot like mine, just with less power. Meaning you really have to get the revs up before any speed comes on. The other thing I really noticed was the difference in steering feel, my car responds so much quicker. We've both got similar suspension and brakes set up but I did notice that my car seemed to have less body roll in the corners and my brakes felt much stiffer than his. Considering the current price of E30 M3's in Canada I wouldn't hesitate to pick up a 318is.
