I think they considered making the 6 series a hardtop but the roof would be too big or something. I saw the coupe today at BMW of Fairfax and that thing is really nice.

I think I read something about them trying to give the 6 series a hardtop, but the look of the softtop was much better, as well as quieter and lighter, but im not 100% positive

Gotcha..sorry. I could see BMW doing it maybe in 7 years when the next 6 comes out. I don't know...do you think it's possible with the new 4 convertible? Seems too expense for the new 3/4 series, but they could pull a coup and shock us all.

From a review on the 6 series, BMW's comments about folding hartops:

"At a time when other manufacturers like Peugeot and arch rival Mercedes-Benz are moving to hard-top convertibles, BMW chose to go with a soft top. BMW claims a folding hardtop reduces boot space and adds too much weight, thus "detracting from the car's dynamic driving pleasure", yet the 6 Series convertible weighs 200kg more than the 1620kg coupe. This extra weight is largely due to the extra chassis rails and bracing needed to compensate for the missing roof -- which is a fundamental structural member. "

2004 530i weighs in at a meer 3483 lbs
2004 325 Cic weighs in at a hefty 3627 lbs

i really thought when the current 6 was released that it would have a hard top on this one, i thought it would be cool...if they had a hard top i know my family would get one...i was thinking of getting a 325Cic but i didn't like soft tops, after being in one i may get one, but i still would prefer a hard top
