"Volkswagen chairman Bernd Pischetsrieder has assured to German magazine Auto Motor und Sport that the company’s radical, mid-engined Concept R roadster will get the green light for production.
Just like Audi’s successful TT, the new VW sports car would be launched in Roadster and Coupe versions. The Concept’s mid-engine layout will be retained, according to Pischetsrieder, mostly due to the difficulties of complying to new, stricter pedestrian safety regulations with a transversal front-engine design.
The car would be built on a hybrid version of the PQ24 and PQ35 platforms, on which the European Polo and the new Golf are respectively based. Power should come from aspirated and turbocharged versions of VW’s new FSI 2.0-liter four, although mounting of the recently-introduced 3.6-liter V6, especially for the North American market, is also a possibility.
Pischetsrieder gave no word on when will the new sportster eventually hit showrooms, but don’t hold your breath until 2007."
