VW 3 Wheeler for the US market

In a world premiere at the Los Angeles Motor show, Volkswagen presents the GX3 – a crossover between a sports car and a motorcycle. The GX3 was developed by the Moonraker Team and VW’s Design Center in California, exclusively for the U.S. With its three wheels and a unique design, this Volkswagen brings pure driving enjoyment back into every day life. Light, fast and environmentally friendly, the GX3 shows that conceptually it is much closer to a motorcycle than to any other type of vehicle. This two-seater Volkswagen is one of a kind, bold, young and affordable. It defines a new driving dimension, turns even the daily drive to work into a small trip to freedom, allows you to cruise in the carpool lane, even if you’re driving solo (the GX3 is a motorcycle, after all!) and with its keen handling opens up completely new horizons for driving pleasure. It accelerates in 5.7 seconds to 62.5 mph (100 km/h) but still only uses an average of 46 mpg (5.2 l/100 km). A realistic dream and pure affordable performance potentially starting under $17,000. Fact is: the antithesis of the motor vehicle establishment, the GX3 could be on the market very soon. It all depends on the American public’s feedback.

I doubt it'd catch on at all here in the States. People like to be able to transport more than just themselves in their cars, and people who buy motorcycles don't want to spend $17k, especially for something that's not even going to perform as well as a traditional motorcycle.

Eric why is it not street legal? If your talking about no rear fender it is not required in most states if it weighs under a stated GVWR.
rear fender, front bumper, etc.

Kirby do you think they would allow a 2 seat 'car' to be registered as a motorcycle?

A motorcycle with a side car is still a motorcycle and it has three wheels! It has as much front bumper as most cars on the road and again I believe that bumpers are not a requirement until such time as you reach a predetermined weight. Fender is not necessary as previously mentioned.

You're saying that a motorcycle with sidecar is the same as a 2 seat car missing a wheel? I don't agree with that. Do you remember the crap chrysler had to go through to make the prowler road legal?

and it drives like crap too.

But the VW thing is still nothing like a motorcycle.

BUT - there is already a "t rex" thing out there (I think that's what it's called) which is basically the same thing, so I guess it would be street legal.

Legal or not, it'll never get here. Give me an arial atom.

Something like half a ton and 300 hp. [pray]

The T-Rex is registered as a car in all states of the US. I would imagine this VW would be registsered as a car as well. More like a motorcycle, but registered as a car.

I have no idea how many wheels the "T-Rex" has, but this VW would be registered as a motorcycle in most states! For example, IC 49-114, 10; "Motorcycle" means every motor vehicle having a seat or saddle for the use of the rider and designed to travel on not more than three (3) wheels in contact with the ground, but excluding a tractor and moped." and the RCW 46.04.330 ""Motorcycle" means a motor vehicle designed to travel on not more than three wheels in contact with the ground, on which the driver rides astride the motor unit or power train and is designed to be steered with a handle bar, but excluding a farm tractor, a power wheelchair, an electric personal assistive mobility device, and a moped."

Well, if we can't decide, it will take YEARS for state officials to beat it to death....[fake]
We'll be in hover vehicles by the time they waste a few million dollars and decide that it should/shouldn't be legal. Imagine if it were PA!! Holy crap it would take longer than the reconstruction of rt. 30 through lancaster. [screwy] [:D] [rofl] [rofl]
