I would say that BMW is still consistent with that statement.
Not only does the new 5 have an interior designer's touch, but it is also a car made from a engineer's view point - take the new M5.
Now those who opt for the luxury side of things can take a regular 5 and if you're into sportiness, you can take the M5.
Best of both worlds I would say!

I'd have to agree with epj3 - Of course BMW's cars are still engineer designed and still near the top in most respects, but they have gone soft since the E46/E39 imho. Money does that to people (and companies!).
But I gotta say the new 5 is fun - even the 530 is plenty fun w/ the 6spd. It's not heavy like the 545 w/ the V8 so it's a bit nimbler. I was honestly surprised at the 530's performance during some test drives back in spring..
