BMW drives into MPV market
BMW is to launch two MPVs aimed at what it believes is a gap at the top of the people carrier market. The compact V3, above, is designed to take on the Mercedes B-class, and the luxury V5 will go head to head with the new Mercedes R-class. The V3 is expected to be launched in 2008, followed a year later by the V5.
The move marks a further expansion for the German marque that already features 4x4s, sports coupés and compact hatchbacks among its range as well the executive saloons for which it is renowned.
Technical details are still sketchy, but the V3 is thought to borrow many mechanical parts from the 1-series and elements of its suspension from the X3 off-roader. The car will offer room for five and the rear seats will fold down into the floor to maximise load capacity. Stop-start technology and hybrid engines may also be used.
