I have an '02 530 with just under 90k. I took it to the dealer because of the check engine light coming on. I was informed I would need to replace the torque converter and possibly the transmission. They indicated it was very rare to see in the 530. The damage would have been either $2200 or over $4k depending upon what needed to be replaced. The service associate told me without me even asking that BMW would pay 50% if the transmission needed to be replaced but likely nothing if it was just the torque converter. Needless to say, I told him to ask what they would do if was the converter. Being this is my first BMW, I was floored. I received a call 30 minutes later saying BMW would pay for the parts if I would pay for labor. Under either scenario, my out of pocket is going to be $535! I have to say that I am pleasantly stunned given everything I have heard and read regarding BMW NA's willingness to do anything when you are out of warranty.
