I have new 2004 530I bought in December 04. Twice the car would not start and a message came up "Transmission Fault". The car has been towed to the dealership only for them to say they can not find a problem.

Has anyone experienced or heard of this problem.

Not positive, but a ton of 04 3 series had problems with their trannies. I didn't read up on it much, but it sounds like it could be the dreaded Sliptronic. Is it an auto?

I think this is something different than the Sliptronic problem. As far as I know, the sliptronic transmissions don't throw a fault code when they slip. Plus, it's something more serious if it is actually preventing the car from starting.

This is a dealer thing. There's no reason that the dealer shouldn't be able to figure this out. If it's indicating a transmission fault and preventing the car from starting, then there has to be a stored code.

I replied to your question down in the 5 series section. There have been similar complaints from owners w/ the SMG transmission. If you do have the SMG transmission, I recall it was software related and resolved w/ a software update. I'd press your dealer to check through the BMW bullitens (TIS I think they call them) about tranny problems on the the '04 5 series. If you don't have the SMG, don't know what to tell you because w/ no codes in the computer, it's likely your dealer will simply give the carback w/ the old "unable to replicate" response...
