Like i said, impressive cg (computer graphics)

Of course its not real!!!! if it were you would have heard about it on tv, and it wouldnt have a gas burning engine in it.

i knew it.
so where does this old man get off with such a creation? such as the joke. but i know if i were an old man with lots of money, id build my own robot too.

i know quite a bit about mechanical engineering, and his design leaves to be outstanding - so much so, it isnt believable.
And on a software note, some of his visual recognition stuff he has going, he must have a team of programmers. not to mention, its all in solid state :/
and lastly, his little acting setups while testing the equipment, ha.

I think it is from a new book coming out called "Men of Metal" (Eyewitness Accounts of Humanoid Robots)by Rowland Samuel.
The only reason that I know this is because an excerpt was in my new issue of Motor Trend that I recieved in the mail on Saturday.
I haven't read it yet, but the picture looks similar to one in the excerpt.

And the web links match the ones in the excerpt. I think the website was set up to promote the book. Dr. Colin Mayhew (mentioned at the bottom of web page) is mentioned quite a bit, along with the location of Oxford england, and Mini Cooper (apperently he owned one), and the Mini's signature "beer can" tail pipe.

Very Impressive, but Totally Fake! Even if you don't believe that it's CG, consider the drive mechanics claim. It states that everything is 95% mechanical drive, 5% electrical.

Think about what it would take with "Cable Drives" (whatever THAT is) to achieve that level of mobility for a mass that big.

A HUGE giveaway - LISTEN to the audio - you hear the sound of ELECTRICAL SERVOS as the robot moves, yet he claims only 5% electrical locomotion!

"The lessons I learned working with the cable drives on the forearm allowed me to make some refinements to the leg design before the parts were sent out to be machined which probably saved me a few weeks time."

"I used machined drive shafts to transmit power to the legs and also used purpose built gearboxes..."

"At first I entertained the thought that the robot may be powered primarily by an electrical source. But I avoided all of this when I took the leap to a more mechanical system. You just can't beat the power density of petrol, and even with the abysmal conversion efficiency of all IC engines, they still beat batteries."

"For a walking gait, about 95% of the power comes directly from the 1.6x4, with the rest electrically coupled. "

Must be a Hoax

I also received a copy of the excerpt from Rowland Samuels book, but I searched everywhere on the Internet, and there is no indication that Rowland Samuel, Casson Publishing in London, or the book "Men of Metal" exist. It must be a hoax, which begs the question "Why on earth would someone spend the money to insert these little booklets in Motor Trend?" It must have cost a fortune.
