THE spoiler question

90% of the time when people talk about how stupid ricers are, they never forget to leave out "AND WHY DO THEY PUT A SPOILER ON A FWD CAR, LOLz!!!111." My question is, does this make sense? I know for a fact that spoilers start working around 100-115mph, but does it necessarily have to be a RWD car for it to actually have any purpose? I personally think that it doesn't really matter whether your car is 4WD, FWD, or RWD in order to have a spoiler. The purpose of a spoiler is to keep your ass on the ground in order to avoid oversteer/understeer when cornering. Sure it might be more useful on a RWD car, but wouldn't it also help on a FWD?

I cannot answer that question as I know NOTHING of physics, I do know however that these new Dodge SRT-4's (As fast as they may be) look like 200 hp Shopping carts to me, as does any other car with a spoiler that sticks up more than say 4 inches off the deck. I saw a freakin Ford Focus 3 door hatchback that had a spoiler on it...on top of it...about 7 inches off the roof....do people actually think that they are cast members in the new Lost and Curious movie? Porche has the right idea.....concealable spoiler that extends WHEN NECESSARY.

Then I have a problem too....I fight the laws of physics everytime I hit the Autobahn. I keep trying to take corners at un-natural speeds. One of these days the "laws of physics" is going to arrest me...in a ditch.

actually it helps, bc fwd are already frontheavy this pushes down on the back side of teh car, supposedly.
Exactly. Actually a spoiler on a car at normal highway cruising speeds will be 'felt' as it will push your rear down and keep the car a little more stable at higher speeds. Anything less than 60mph, I'd say it's not doing much for you, except drawing attention. [:)]

Ricer, schmicer, put whatever you want on your car man. Just make sure it actually 'does' something, just putting some polyurethane back there doesn't mean it's always going to be a positive, performance or otherwise.

Throw it on man, it's an instant 10hp gainer just like clears.

Well said!

The new M3 lip is the way to go--something subtle and funtional. And the new performance cars should have a rear designed to act like a spoiler. Spoilers are just plain silly and so '90s. They almost draw attention to the fact that the aerodaynamics of the car are designed so poorly that add-on parts are necessary. (The Audi TT had a recall and offered all owners of the car a rear spoiler cuz the rear end was lifting up at high speeds...bad undercariage design.)

Wings on ricers cars do nothing under 60 mph except create drag = SLOWER performance!

Ross Bentley, in the book "Speed Secrets", has a whole section on aerodynamics. Just about everything the ricers do is wrong, or they do it for the wrong reasons. He claims that wings/spoilers are useless below 60 mph, and marginal under 100 mph. This is a great book to read even if you don't race. I bought it to help my AutoX skills, it's well worth the $15.

my problem is that most of the ricers i see roll around, can't do anything but drive in a straight line. and then that spoiler pushing on the rear wheels is stupid. most those cars are geared out at 110 mph anyways. i also doubt they have any idea what pitch the spoiler is set at. i'd consider a 1 or 2 inch lip on my trunklid, but i'd be the last thing i do to my car.

i'm going to guess that the spoiled on a ricer (fwd) is going to add understeer, not get rid of it. its gonna plant your rear wheels and pullweight ont he front, yeah, understeer. which all those cars (all cars) are dialed into anyways

Fortunately, I generally don't see ricers on a daily basis, but their whole purpose just makes no sense. Let's say you wanna buy a car and mod the crap out of it. Why would you start with a Civic? A Civic is just your everyday average economy car. Everything about the Civic is aimed towards economy, practicality, and simplicity. Why would you take that car and do everything in your power to make it a sports car? At least START with a sports car and make it better...don't start with an econobox....that's where all the hate really comes from.
