Drove my '90 525i from South Central PA to Albany NY and back yesterday - 650 miles in 11 hours with an hour stop for lunch with my family. This was my first trip of decent length and the car ran flawlessly. Avg. mpg was 27.0 at 74 mph. Only had two scares - a deer crossing the Taconic Parkway (at 1 pm!) turned back when I hit the horn, and a PA state trooper flying by at 100 mph + on his way to an accident on I81 (serious case of 'where did he come from'). I'm so glad I found this 14 year old gem!!

I can SO relate to you!! I have an 88 325is. You figure, your car has the exact engine as mine and was hauling a lot more!! 173k miles on the clock and it still takes highways without a challenge.
The PA highways going through PA (esp south central, which is very close to where I live) are hilly too. I81 is fairly hilly. Not sure if you went onto 11 or 15, but they are SUPER hilly.

I did the trip in somewhat of a figure eight - I83 to I 81 to I78 to I287 to I87 then secondary roads on the way up, and Taconic Parkway to I84 to I81 to I83 on the way back. Had to check out the Rip Van Winkle Bridge over the Hudson in Catskill NY (hence the secondary roads) - I painted the under-structure two summers during the late 70's and wanted to see how it looked today.
I'll be doing the trip again late this week to pick up my daughter. I'll probably stay over night in NY this trip and spend more time with the folks.
