Old news to most of y'all, but being here in Germany we don't see all the "new" American cars till after they are launched in the US..usually for some time. I remember a thread talking about how the Crysler 300 beat out the BMW 530i according to some magazine. I sat in my FIRST 300 yesterday and it reminded me of a model...like the kind you build with super glue. Piece of Sheeeet. Where do people get their comparrisons from? There is NO comarison on any level of this 300 to ANY German built car to include Opel. So being the proud BMW owner that I am I went into the American (military) dealership and politely asked the sales rep (a fellow Irishman) what the hell that plastic piece of garbage was that was sitting out side. Man that guy got all wacked out of shape. Talking about all kinds of crazy stuff and trying to justify the comparison to begin with. So I took him outside to my BMW and let him sit in it, start it up, look at the engine, hear the stereo and what not....then we went over the 300 POS and did the same......THERE IS NO COMPARISON!!!!! Well by the end of it all the only thing this now pissed off Irishman could say is that the 300 cost less. Some one please tell me what the criteria is for making a comparison between a 30k vehicle and a 50k vehicle. It cannot be on quality...they are on 2 completely separate planets. I just don't get it. If a BMW is a "car" then the 300 should be called something else...not even worthy of the name "car" JMO I was very disappointed...I had expected more from all the hype.

Hey now OPEL is a GREAT CAR...
When was the last time you drove an Opel? My wife has an Opel...I hate it, If I am not mistaken, Opel is owned by GM and it has "genuine" GM quality or lack there of. When my wife wants to drive me somewhere in it..I tell her that I would rather ride my bike.[thumb]

My Uncle owns an Opel and he took it to 220kmh on the autobahn when I was 7yrs old and it was a ton of fun, felt stable and safe. I don't know about the new Opels (take the new bmws for example, obviously the quality has deteriorated) but from what I remember Opel is a great car. GM and Ford EURO are better than their American counterparts.[driving]

USA Today has an article about the 300 today. Chrysler says they can't build enough they are so hot. They go on to say that it competes all the way from the $23K Honda Accord to the $35K+ Cadillac, Lexus, etc.

Sheesh - The biggest difference in that range is the engine option and interior options. It is STILL a $23K base cost car, and therefore that level of design, build quality, reliability, etc. Let's wait 3 or 4 years and see what the % of list resale value is .......

That's exactly what I was saying when we brought up the article. The 300 should NOT have been in that comparison! I really do think the 300 is a great car for the price, though.

I think this is the first time I can ever recall a Chrysler car selling at or above sticker and is still in short supply. Carsdirect.com is showing a “target price” at retail sticker, which tells me that they will try to get retail but don’t count on it. They are showing BMW 3 series at about $2,000.00 under sticker and some Pontiac at $4,000.00 or more off retail sticker. This is truly a strange phenomenon to see Chrysler in this position. I guess they have a design people like.

Actually BMW 3 series sells on invoice with the dealer incentive till 6/30 if you bargain just right and the car is dealer inventory.

I was talking to a friend of my sister a few weeks ago. He was OBSESSED to get a 300 (apparently they have the same effect on others as our bimmers have on us). He found a dealer 60 miles away on Chrylser's web site that was getting a shipment of 2 cars in the next day. He called and they were not sold, but the dealer told him he must come in the next day and be there when the TRUCK SHOWED UP if he wanted one of them.

He went to the dealer and waited. As the truck was being unloaded the salesman told him he had 5 minutes to decide which of the 2 cars he wanted at $2000 over list - There were two other customers waiting in the showroom to take the car that he didn't choose!!!!!

I don't get it.....Maybe it is because i have a Bimmer and that is what I compare other cars to now. I really think that that 300 is cheap, looks cheap, the engine looks very cheap...not like a Bimmer engine that is all nice and well kept and organized. There are wires all over the place on the 300. Like I say to others about my car...If you don't like it...don't buy it. I guess it won't be on my wish list.

When the pt cruiser first came out, it sold in a number of areas for 1-2k over msrp and you still had to wait 3-6 months for it (simply not worth it for any car imo [screwy] ). A couple of dealers here would buy them from dealerships in canada just so that they could resell them here in the US for those that didn't want to be on the waiting list (for a premium of course). This really screwed the customer, because they would then have to get financing for a "used" car, and the speedometer had the large numbers in kmph and the small numbers in mph.

I rented an Opel once when my car was in the shop. I would have to agree that they are a piece of crap. My biggest fear was attempting to get up the mountain everyday. Had it to the floor and doing about 60 k. Opel not for me.

well, my mom has an opel convertible for fun. and i have to tell you that car is great. no signs of lack of quality, fast to drive and looks really good. opel btw builds very good and reliable engines. in fact, there are VW drivers that really admit opel builds the better engine. coming from a VW driver that is as normally not what you expect.

opel has a bad reputation and people tend to seek and find flaws in opel´s cars. for that reason opel can´t get rid of that rep.

In SoCal, when the PT Cruiser first came out, you had dealers putting an $8K premium on it letting suckers bargain them down to about $5K over sticker. Now they can't give em away.

The same will happen to the 300 in a couple of years. I think it'll do a bit better than say the PT Cruiser or the Ford Thunderbird though cuz while cheap, it's still a useful and mainstream car. The quality isn't a big deal. Most American sedans are made like crap anyways so the remaining buyers wouldn't be bothered by that.

I think so as well. It seems like there's always some sort of deal for cars from the big 3. The exception would be cars like the Viper. My wife got a card from Buick the other day stating that if she buys another buick before x date, they will take $5000 off plus any other incentives. I have to laugh though. Her Redevous was 30k two years ago and now the trade in value is a little under 13k. Domestic auto's simply do not retain any kind of value.

[rofl] [rofl] [rofl]

Maybe you should have spent a little more money and rented an Opel with a bigger, more powerfull engine. That's like driving Lexus and going to an Echo and complaining...

I like the Chrysler 300 a lot, I think it's a great car for the price and it looks great inside and out. But I had no idea they were in such high demand...I rarely see them on the road and they look great, but nothing amazing. I think it is a great-looking luxury sedan for the price, though.
Some of you may say "the car is cheap", well the price of the car is cheap. You get what you pay for and I think the 300 is an awesome value. It looks (inside and out) SO much more expensive than what it's worth.
