Kelly Blue Book Survey of 400 respondents:

Car Buyers Choose Best Road Trip Vehicles

Despite the fact that a gallon of gas is still 25 cents more than it was a year ago, 30 million people or 84 percent of Memorial Day weekend travelers expect to drive, according to AAA. That being said, the road test editors of Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com chose 10 current vehicles they thought would be most suited to road trips and then asked car buyers which of these vehicles they would most like to take on the road this summer. The results have been tallied and the chart below displays consumers' rankings:

Rank Choice %
1. 2005 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible-19%
2. 2005 Chevrolet Suburban -17%
3. 2006 Chrysler 300 SRT8 -15%
4. 2005 Honda Odyssey -10%
5. 2006 Lexus RX 400h -9%
6. 2005 Land Rover LR3 -8%
7. 2006 BMW 530XIT -7%
8. 2005 Mazda RX-8 -6%
9. 2005 Volkswagen Phaeton -5%
10. 2005 MINI Cooper Convertible -4%

This year domestic manufacturers dominate the top spots with three very different models - Chevrolet's classic sporty Corvette Convertible ranking first, family-hauling and towing favorite Chevrolet Suburban placing second, and Chrysler's 300 SRT8 performance sedan coming in third. With hefty prices still evident at the gas pump, Lexus' all-new luxury hybrid RX 400h SUV ranked in the middle of the pack among consumers' choices for a road trip this summer.

Kbb.com Editors' Comments on Each Vehicle:

2005 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible - This isn't just a bow to the Martin Milner/George Maharis TV series; the current Corvette can shorten distances in ways few can match and is likely the greatest performance-car value on the market.

2005 Chevrolet Suburban - There's a reason customers buy one Suburban after another - for those with large families and those who tow boats or trailers, this is the vehicle of choice. With capacity for up to nine passengers and plenty of gear, the Suburban is a very comfortable long-range hauler.

2006 Chrysler 300 SRT8 - The big American car lives! In the 300, Chrysler has captured the presence of a big American sedan and bestowed it with not only bold styling but the performance to make a statement.

2005 Honda Odyssey - If your road trip qualifies as a group activity, setting sail in the new, even roomier Odyssey will help deter any fights for the front seat. And because it sometimes runs on just three of its six cylinders, it delivers a segment-leading 28 miles per gallon on the highway.

2006 Lexus RX 400h - Smooth road manners, lots of passing power and high gas mileage make this car-like, roomy SUV a travel-worthy vessel for today's upscale, socially conscious driver. Though it won't scale steep, boulder-strewn mountain trails, it will carry you comfortably over the harsh realities of paved highways.

2005 Land Rover LR3 - Though road trips can sometimes land you in rather rustic places, you still might want to travel in style while having the muscle to make it up the mountain. If so, the LR3 will get you and your clan to the top.

2006 BMW 530XIT - Fewer things are more satisfying than outrunning and out-handling others while at the wheel of a station wagon. With its super-smooth 215-horsepower in-line six-cylinder engine and sweet as Splenda® handling, the BMW 530XIT is great car for hauling you, friends and stuff.

2005 Mazda RX-8 - With the unique hum of the rotary engine, 50:50 even weight distribution and adequate seating for four adults, Mazda's RX-8 combines the fun of driving a true sports car and the practicality needed to travel with more than one passenger.

2005 Volkswagen Phaeton - Twelve cylinders, 420 horsepower and an upscale cabin that reminds you of the late, lamented Concorde supersonic jet, the Phaeton makes you feel like you're part of a very exclusive club.

2005 MINI Cooper Convertible - If you want to blast through Europe with the wind rushing through your hair, or just pretend you're blasting through Europe top-down amid the grain fields of Nebraska, you couldn't ask for a more willing or fun-to-drive partner. And the gas money won't break you either.

No Vette, no RX-8, and no Mini. Those aren't roadtrip cars. The mini would be ok if it's just two people and a short trip. That's not much of a roadtrip tho. Otherwise, I agree with the list.

Needs some minivans and more Lexus' tho. Got a ride in a 300C last nite. That would make an excellent road trip car. Since you can rent them, I highly recommend trying to get one of those. I found it more comfy than a Town Car.

I vote the burban. We rented one for this spring, it was awesome. Seating was very roomy, it drove like a dream (for a very large vehicle) and the mpg wasn't too bad. We averaged 20 mpg with it.

I don't know why you would want to road trip in a vette... When I think of a road trip I am thinking 500 miles +. Now for a sunday afternoon drive, that is diffrent.

It depends on the definition of "Road Trip". In 97 the wife and I did a "road trip" from Lewiston Idaho via US12 to the Canada Border, than across and down the Oregon coast. Oour 97 Z3 2.8 was perfect! We had sunny warm weather most of the trip and had the top down the entire trip. The "Going to the Sun Highway" through Glacier park was everything a convertible was made for.

We have also taken some great road trips in our 750iL, they are great freeway vehicles!

More Lexus what are you nuts, buy a Toyota its the same thing.

I drove the 300C when it came out, strange car.
No I'm not nuts and no they're not the same thing. Toyota doesn't have as much sound deadening. When I'm traveling long distances, I want the ride as smooth and quiet as possible. Lexus is better than Toyota in that department. They're based off the same chassis generally, but Toyota throws more sound deadening material and stuff in the Lexus models. It's not the badge engineering GM does.

I had a chance test driving a Corvette. My legs were not long enough for gas & brake. The sale got me a thick yellow page@!><>*&%$ He then added, "This car is designed for men!" It gave me a backpain. The europeans are my size. Plus they have better performance. It is a better trip in any way. Wonder how many 530XIT CAR BUYERS there are, since it just been out for test drive and order?

Part of me assumes that KBB's list is nothing more than guerrilla marketing, because that's just a really odd assortment of cars. On the other hand, if it was guerrilla marketing, I doubt they would have made a mistake like saying the 530xiT is 215 hp. I'm not missing something, am I? All the 525s are now 215hp, and the 530s are 255, right?

Nope the 2006 530XIT is 215 hp. According to Autosite and all others I looked at; "Upon introduction, the 525i Sedan is equipped with a standard 3.0-liter, I6, 215-horsepower engine that achieves 19-mpg in the city and 28-mpg on the highway. A 6-speed m transmission with overdrive is standard, and a 6-speed a transmission with overdrive is optional. The 545i Sedan is equipped with a standard 4.4-liter, V8, 325-horsepower engine that achieves 17-mpg in the city and 25-mpg on the highway. A 6-speed m transmission with overdrive is standard, and a 6-speed a transmission with overdrive, and a 6-speed m transmission with overdrive are optional. The 2006 BMW 5 Series is a carryover from 2005. "

No fair; you made me look. I just double checked the BMW NA site and the 530xiT is 255hp.

Shame on KBB or shame on the BMW marketers for not proofing their advertisement, err I mean, top 10 list.

The first few new 5 series used the M54 engines (i think that's the code for them) out of the E39 and E46 - now they are using the new motors which are much lighter and more powerful.

And mini uses genuine bmw parts, but it's not a bmw, is it? His point wasn't the parts - it was that the cars are different and they are. His argument was that lexus are better cars than toyota, which they are. That's why it's completely stupid for you to shoot down his statement. That's like saying a $191,000 Porsche 911 GT2 is practically the same as a Jetta, becuase it's just a VW anyways.
