[eek] We had our 2005 Mini S and 2000 540i stolen last week. The 540 has been recovered with minimm damage but the owners manual and all records are missing!!! Does anyone have any information as to impact of this on the value of the car? I am filing a claim and I know I would not buy such a car so I am hoping there is some precident that says that insurance has to compensate for 'lost value" for such things. I am anticipating that they are not going to want to pay anything.

Any input is welcome.

Your service records should be recoverable through the BMW data base. Have your service advisor print them out again. He should also be able to get you another owners manual. Your insurance company should be willing to pay for this service, but I think your going to be fighting a losing battle to try and say the car's resale value has decreased x amount because of these two things. Best of luck, and it's too bad about your "double" misfortune.

Insurance companies do not pay for loss of value.......only the damage or if not recovered the "blue book" value of the car.........if you added items that are not on the original bill of material, produce those receipts to get the fair market value of add on items; i.e. wheels, tint, etc.........plus if any of your personal items in the car were stolen they will be covered by your homeowners' policy. If you have Liberty Mutual they pay the full value if your car is stolen in the first 12 months of ownership...................you may also want to look into www.trackmenow.com or some type of Lojack system for the future.........sorry to hear I've been through this before and its tough........once the insurance company made their offer I had three days to accept or decline the offer.....of course I declined the offer and had to return their rental car as well at the end of the third day........its a mess......good luck...........

They likely stole your owners manual cuz many people leave the spare key in there. Often one of the only things stolen from a BMW. Service done at teh dealer is still there. You can have it reprinted. Should be able to get another copy of the manual. Having those two items stolen isn't going to affect teh value that much. If the car suffered little damage, it likely won't affect anything unless you go around blabbing to potential buyers that it was previously stolen.

Am I the only one wondering how you have two BMW type vehicles stolen? Normally, BMW's arent that easy to steal or so I thought due to the ignition not starting without a key..........

No you're not. I wondered the same thing. It seems as though someone doesn't like this person to take both of their cars....

It's a real bummer, good luck....

*EDIT* added the word "like". It should read better now... :)

We were out of town, took a taxi to the airport, and they broke into our house while we were gone. They also stole household goods and used our cars to cart the stuff away....

Ugly story.
