Ok guys, need help. Getting into a 10,000 mi 850i. Now I am replacing the Head Unit with an Alpine I had in an e34 M5, yup, lights up orange. Then I'm adding a F-357 5-channel amp. Now I have 2 questions: I have 2 sets of MB Quart 6.5 components and a 12" Alpine XR Sub.

1. What suggestion are there for the 12 inch sub? I don't want my trunk to be filled by a big enclosure, but I have seen a Free Air install on an e46 M3.

2. Is there a way I can get crossovers in order to separate the sound from my factory speakers. I have sets of 6.5 inch components. So I thought of adding my Mb quart tweeters and using the crossovers with the factory "mid"rangers. I ask this because in some installs, believe it or not, I''ve felt sorry for replacing factory speakers over some higher end speakers (ie, 2001 Passat).

Either that or a bigger network crossover or just get the 5.25 Components.

Free air is probably the best way to save space, but you need to make sure the trunk is sealed from the outside and from the interior cabin. Free air basically uses the trunk as the box. But not for the best performance because the speaker enclosure should match the speaker specs.

The best sound comes from splitting the signal at line-level (pre-amp). If you do want to add extra speaker to the factory wire you will need to wire them in parallel and keep the nominal impedence to i believe is 8ohm. crossovers are only for separating frequency for subs, midrange and tweeter.

Will update my specs, and where would I put the pics?, have to take them, I'm searching for the best way to fix a leaky intake manifold gasket, will go with the Dinan kit. Back to the subject at hand.

I will dedicate sometime to take pics of the truck space so I can get some feedback of what I could do, anybody any pics of 850 install, gee, hard to find.

Now, I wasn't clear of what you state. I was thinking of taking my MB Quart QM series components (which are a 6.5 inchers) and installing them in the 850 (Front and Rear) MINUS the MID-RANGE drivers, I plan on keeping the factory mid-range drivers. I guess that by using the Amps' built-in crossover and the MB quarts Crossover modules I can better the performance of the factory speakers.

Now I believe this would be better than installing a large crossover network on the amp, kinda thinkaboutit, i can't cause i'll need an amp for each signal level, right?

I know I still need to re-wire the speakers, I've seen in my previous BMWs that skinny flimsy cable, plus audio wire is cheap and worth it.

I'll post the process.

I sold it in 2000, i DO REGRET selling it, it was a Maritimus Blue with light gray interior. Honestly, I got more that what I paid for it. I was kinda thinking of getting a newer M5, but never got around to it. So now I found this PRISTINE 10,000 miles BMW 850, Black and Light Silver, and wanna keep it as my collectors' car. Got it under 20 grand too.

By the way, if that is your 3-series SWEET!

Paul

PS-How do I post pics?
