Hey,

I need a Snell SA rated helmet but I know pretty much nothing about helmets. I see that prces vary from around $120 up to over $1,000. That is a large spread and I am not sure why. I was thinking of an open face helmet for better visibility, lighter weight, more comfort, and most importantly, better cooling! Can anybody recommend brands or certain helmets that are cheap and good?

Thanks,

You're going autocrossing or to a track day, eh? That's the only time an SA (Special Application) helmet is required. During tech inspection they will look for the sticker inside the helmet.

Go to http://www.smf.org/ and click on the Certified Helmets link to get a list of SA2005 certified helmets.

HJC makes good, lower cost helmets. I have owned several and have been very satisfied. Bell and Simpson are expensive but are the BEST.

Cheaper helmets are usually a bit less comfortable, and the padding inside may not hold up as well. But for your casual use, the durability will not be a problem.

You should REALLY try to test fit some helmets before buying one online. Different manufacturers have slightly different designs and can actually make a BIG difference in comfort. Sizes vary between manufacturers so a particular HJC size might be too big or small compared to a Bell, Simpson, Arai, etc.

Kirby is right on here, try them on, find out what brand fits you best and feels best, than you can order on line. A poorly fitting helmet will really be a pain in the a$$(well actually the head) after hours behind the wheel on a track.

Like they said, go to a motorcycle shop and try a few on. Then order them online cheaper. They are all a little different. I ride a motorcycle so I have a decent full-face helmet. Always had good luck with Shoei. I think Arai is the best but expensive. HJC is a good deal. Try going to http://www.compacc.com

Test fitting in a motorcycle shop is a good suggestion, but keep in mind that the majority of helmets there will not be Snell SA, they will be Snell M (Motorcycle), and will not be acceptable at tech inspect if the specify Snell SA.
