Service Action Maintenance

Well, I brought in my M3 in to the dealer to get the work done from the latest Service Action announcement. Actually, I had two Service Action's needed for my car. I had the connecting rod bearings and a SMG programming. When I get the car back I have to go through the bread in period again:

After the service action is performed on your M car, a 1,200-mile break-in period must be observed and engine speed should not exceed 5,500 rpm.
They told me they could have the car done and ready for pickup by end of day, but ended up getting very busy and did not want to rush my car through. They wanted more time with it. BMW has the system worked out and is able handle the large Service Action. Every time I go into the dealer and go to the parts dept. I have to go through the service area and there is always at least 2/3 M3's on hoists getting it done. There are parts everywhere around the car neatly laid out. Makes you hope the car runs as good, if not better, and has no long-term effects from this. [paranoid]

Yeah, I was at the local BMW dealer the other day, and there were 4 M3s in there having their connecting rod bearings replaced. Man, that's a big job. I sure hope you don't have any problems.

here it is, posted by Big Daddy

Friday, SI B 11 04 04 Technical service bulletin was issued.

Subject:
Service Action E46 M3 S54 Connection Rod Bearings Replacement

Model:
E46 M3 coupe/convertibles with S54B32 engine produced from 2/12/2001 up to 5/22/2003.

Situation:
The connecting rod bearings installed in M3 coupe/convertible vehicles produced from February 2001 through May 2003 were not manufactured to BMW quality standards. As a result, the connecting rod bearings are susceptible to overheating and subsequent premature failure if vehicles are driven at higher engine speeds over an extended time frame. This condition will cause total engine failure...

The M3 vehicles produced from October 2001 through February 2002, which already had the Connecting Rod Bearings/Oil Pump Campaign 356 (SI B 11 02 03) previously performed, are also affected by this Service Action.

MSpeed which BMW dealer is doing the service, Seattle BMW? Let us know when you get her back.
Yes Big Daddy, it is BMW Seattle. So far they are the only dealer that has worked on the car. They have the full history and so far they have been pretty good. I will let you know when it is done. Should be Mon. We'll see. I don't want them to rush it and they don't either. I have having them check the rear breaks too. I hear a scraping sound from the rear left (driver side) caliper. It is mostly when first start it up and back it out of garage. I put the car in first and go forward and it is there a little, but goes away. They will check it and let me know. It has been doing if for only 2 days. I don't think it is anything major.

I am wondering what the SMG programming will do to the gearbox. I guess I will have to wait and see. Keeping fingers crossed.....

P.S. When are we going to get together for sure Bid Daddy? I would love to talk shop with you sometime.

Any time you want, my schedule is pretty clear for the next couple of months. I am volunteering for work at the Republican HQ in Bellvue, but other than that I am free. I'm hanging out at PR today. We could meet for coffee at Starbucks?

Well got the car back today. When I took it in they said they could have it done by end-of-day Sat. They got backlogged and couldn’t get it done until today. They are closed Sundays. When I took it in I told them about a grinding noise I heard from what sounded like the rear left (driver side) brake. I was going around a corner (about 5 Mph) when I heard the noise. This was Fri. the night before I was to take the car in.

The next morning, while backing out of the garage, I heard the noise again, but a lot louder (this also happened late Fri night when I was backing up) and stopped once I put the car into 1st gear and drove off. I mentioned this to the service rep. when I took the car in for the connecting rod bearings. They took note to check.

Today (Monday) I was waiting to hear from BMW, but they never called. I called them about 3:00pm to see what was up. After a few minutes, I finally got hold of the service tech checking over my car. He stated the Service Action work was finished on Sat., but they have been trying to diagnose my brake-sounding problem today. They could not replicate it. They checked the breaks, but all looked good. When I called service manager was just coming back from a test ride to see if he could find the problem. He stated that a common problem (actually it is an Open Campaign) with some of the E46 M3's is grinding noises from the rear differential. 90% of time this is remedied with a change in the differential fluid and new seal, which they stated they were going to do while I was on my way up to pick up the car. They said if the differential fluid does not work and the grinding comes back (and gets worst) they would have to replace all the gears in the differential. They stated this has only been done to one M3 there, all the rest the fluid/seal change worked. We'll see.

When I got there and was looking over the paper work they noted I had a screw in my rear passenger side tire, which they could not fix. I questioned this. Why could they not fix a screw in a tire that is not near the sidewall? These are brand new tires. I found out the tire machine is down and couldn’t because of that; bummer. The tire does not seem to be loosing air at this time, however I need to get it repaired soon.

The car runs great from the little drive I took from the dealer to my house. The car sounds throatier, in car, than before. I hope it is not some kind of leak. I will keep and open ear just to make sure. It sounds nice and tight. I have to lay off the throttle especially when cold. I talked to the service manager and general manager for a while and asked if there is anything that I should be aware of from this service. They stated nothing. I asked if there have been any problems with the M's that have already had the Service Action performed on and what if anything I should keep a close eye on. They said there has not been any long term affects from this. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I asked if the SMG update will change the way it operates in any form and they said you wont see a difference in the way it is used. On the way home I could not tell anything.

Well, hopefully all is well and I wont have any problems. Time will tell. All this work did not cost me a thing (the best kind) and I got a free oil change (they did not reset OBC), a full tank of gas, and they changed my w/shield wipers. I suggest anyone out there that is going to get the connection rod bearing done to take it in on empty. They will give you a full tank, which I thought was great.

Thanks guys, that is where I plan on taking the car soon. I just need to reset the traction control for the tire pressure once I do. So far the car is doing fine. I will watch the rear differential though. There is too much new house construction around my area.

Well that grinding sound came back today. I heard it twice. I can't say it is worst, but it is still there. I am calling BMW about it tomorrow to see what is up. I want this fixed asap. If it is the rear differential gears I want it remedied quickly. Seems to me the new gear oil and seal did not work. This is kind of bumming me out.....

Heard the sound again. I called BMW and have it scheduled for Oct. 25th. I may call back to see if it better wait just a little while though. The sound does not happen that often and there is no pattern to recreate it.

I really don't want the BMW techs driving my car all day just to try and replicate the problem the way they did the first time. They spend the better part of a full day driving my car to replicate it. Hopefully, the ones who drove it know it just had the connector rod bearings replaced and drove it gently.
