Why did they just destroy it like that? Man, I can't believe it went to 9K rpm, though !! That is a great engine!! Whenever I take my car to it's 6,600rpm redline, I kinda wish I had like an 8K+ rpm redline....I think that would be so cool to have such a high-revving engine.

6600 isn't that bad when you have torque. Sure the high rpm is fun for a while, but eventually, you realize that driving in the real world, you use torque a lot more.

Its actually called a Wankle. They were going to use that car as a parts car, why not see what it could do.
But i laughed at their bets because i figured it would run longer than that. Its not like a cylinder engine where you are putting large amounts of stress on components.
actually, im surprised that most car companies still use this conventional cylinder engine. there are other, more efficient and more powerful engine designs out there.

that was an interesting video. in most cases you'd have to fear a cylinder flying out at your head, but not with the trusty non-torque wankle.[thumb]

NO, its called Wankle engne because we ARE giving props to the man who invented it. The style of engine is a rotory, yes.
What are you complaining about calling an engine a wankle anyway, about the only time you brits can say it in formal public without being looked at like youre crazy [;)]

I really wanna test-drive the Mazda RX-8. I really wanna see how that rotary engine feels...all the reviews say the engine is just so damn smooth. codex, you're right, the lack of torque in a rotary engine could be annoying for daily driving, but it may just encourage you to drive harder. Since this thing has a 9,000rpm redline, driving it at 4,000rpm average is not like driving my G35C at 4,000rpm average. I remember that when I test-drove the Honda S2000 (another high-revving, 9,000rpm engine, although not rotary), it just didn't feel wrong to be chilling at 4K-5Krpm and it was just so cool !!

if anyone is even thinking about it, test drive the RX8. A buddy of mine (and the place where we bought our BMW) let me test beat an RX8...it is the most amazing experience behind the wheel I have ever had...I used to be a service advisor, and Ive driven some cool cars before, But this one really makes you excited. and by the way, if the rev limiter is taken off an older rx7, they can go upwards of 12k rpm...seen it...it is kinda scary hearing that thing drive away and you almost cant see him anymore before you hear it shift into second (the owner of the dealership drives RX7's and Miatas in SCCA racing)

yeah, it looked to me that the rev limiter was still on that thing - any assumptions on why it climbed a few more rpm once run hard?
maybe everything heated up and cleaned off real well and had better, fluid motion maybe?
here is a thread i posted a little while back of a 4 cyl. version of the wankle, pics dont work but i think the video links still do.

The link doesn't seem to be active anymore. Does anyone know how to find it? I used to own an RX-7, and I'd like to see the video. It was a nice, smooth car, and I used to wind it out all the time.

let me just sum the vid up for you.
they hold full throttle at 9k rpm for like 6 minutes before the coolant wasnt enough to keep the engine running proper and the car choked a slow and pathetic death. the exhaust pipes were so red, the car caught on fire, they put it out, end of story.
not much to it
