I'm on my way down to Talledega for the autox event sunday and not an hour out of memphis, I happen to be the unlucky one to have a full wrap thrown in my face!
SON OF A B*TCH!!!! This is the SECOND time in a year! I had to get home Sunday night and counted around 20 more retreads in 200 miles - each one scaring the hell out of me, not wanting to be thrown in the air again and wreck more sh!t.

What do you think about this subject?

Lucky for me, I found the truck 4 miles down getting his tires changed. Pissed off (and upset), I pulled over and got his insurance and other info. Called his company and they told me to sod off if i didnt have a police report. F*** them! So I called in the claim and they are supposed to look at it tomorrow. And I dont know if I will get reparations, but if I do.... im thinking body kit time.

damn, and i just got her finished too.

(Busted high beam, both fogs AND housings, both blinkers, bumper and molding cracked, under-body covers all cracked, valance is toast, spoiler shattered, fender crunched and the door with a nice dent. Lucky the marks came off the rims with rainX. Thats what 70 mph, a full size retread, and no where to move will do to you.)

Man.....OUCH. I think this is why retreads are illegal in Germany. I can not even imagine what hitting a wrap at 130mph's would do. Sorry about that man and good luck with the insurance

Yeah, ive had that happen too in 99. not a pretty sight when youre 15 feet behind the 18 wheeler.

Last fall I almost posted a how-to-... couldnt figure out what to how-to while i was repairing the thing myself. At least i have some experience now. Still gonna cost me $ cuz the valence, fender, door, lights, and spoiler have to be replaced.

Uhhh - Tom - What are you doing with MyHarley's foot?

I agree, retreds should be illegal. At least they they aren't allow to be used as stearing tires - could you imagine how many accidents that would cause?

Wow. I drove through Memphis a few weeks ago and I noticed the retreads all over the road leading in and out. One of them almost got me too! That is wierd. Isn't that town a big shipping city? The number of trucks on the road were unreal. Don't they have clean up crews?

Sorry to hear that xLibelle. At least you weren't involved in a more serious accident. Good Luck with the repairs.

Can I just ask: WTF are ReTreads???
From my understanding when a truck tire wears down to the point that the water evacuation chambers (tread) are not sufficient for driving, the outside layer is removed and replaced by another strip of rubber that has new treads. Unfortunately many times this added layer doesn’t bond well with the existing rubber and comes of while driving on the highway.

Taken from epa.gov:
In most situations, retread tires can be driven under the same conditions and at the same speeds as new tires with no loss in safety or comfort. In fact, retread tires have been safely used on school buses, trucks, cars, fire engines, and other emergency vehicles for years. Retreading tires also helps conserve a valuable nonrenewable resource—oil. Every year, retreading saves more than 400 million gallons of oil in North America. Retread tires also help divert thousands of scrap tires from disposal each year.
Take a look at the big picture: How many $$ in insurance claims vs $$ saved by retreads?
Retreads will always win. It sucks, but its not the re-treads fault. Its either A. The cheap bastards at the trucking company that do not get QUALITY retreads and B. Those same cheap bastards that push the retreads too far/too long. Its all about the cost savings guys...

I had a freshly-painted T-bird get mucked up by a retread shredding. But that was 6 years ago and I haven't been tagged by one since! I'm doing my part to save the planet! HA!
