Regular Oil to Synthetic??

Hey,

My car runs on regular motor oil which has to be changed every 3,750 miles. I have 3,524 miles on it right now and I am taking it in for its first service appointment (oil & filter change, and some inspection) on Thursday. The oil the car runs on is 5w-30 motor oil and I was wondering if I could/should switch to synthetic 5w-30 motor oil and change the oil & filter myself every 4,000 miles. I run my engine hard and I figure that synthetic oil is better for high-revving engines. I am also figuring that Infiniti uses regular motor oil only to cut back on service costs for its customers. What do you all think?

Thanks,
MrElussive

If you plan to keep the car for a long period of time I would use the synthetic. It lubricates better and works better on initial startup, more so when cold out. My thoughts!

Well, the car is leased (3 years, 36,000 miles), and I am going to give the car back at the end of the lease. So if there is no benefit within those 36,000 miles, it's a helluva cheaper and easier to just give it to Infiniti every 3,750 miles.

Always go with the Dealer its the best way and will keep them happier. the know what there talking about and if you have a problem there is nothing they can say or do apart from fix or replace parts at no cost to you. i know with the new M5's if you don't use 10w60 oil then the waranty for any oily engine parts is gone!!!! and that stuff cost £25 a litre!!!

I have used Mobil-I motor oil for years and won't use anything else.

It's the official motor oil of NASCAR.

I'm a firm believer that the oil is the lifeblood of your engine and the most important thing

you can do for it {your engine} is change the oil every 3-4 thousand miles using Mobil-I.

You can go to Costco, Walmart etc. and pick-up a case for the best price...

You can use any oil that meets or exceeds the manufacturers requirements without any warranty loss. In the case of a lease for 36 months and 36k wherein you are not going to keep the car, I would let them use whatever they want.

Since the car is leased I wouldn't waste my money on synthetic oil or any other unscheduled maintenance for that matter. If you owned it and actually cared about the long term benefits of synthetic vs. dino, which might give you a return for your investment, that would be different. I would only do the recommended maintenance to the thing, nothing else.

You don't own the vehicle so why spend extra money on the maintenance when you will get nothing in return for your efforts?

Running synthetic oil in a leased Infiniti is a waste of your $$$.

i dun think infinity offers free maint...

but i can't believe synth would only give you 250 more miles than reg oil? it should at least last until 7500 no?

porsche's oil change is every 15k miles w/ their 100% synth, 20k in the cayanne.. same w/ bmw doing their oil change every 15k or whatever computer says or once a year. so i'd say 4000 per synth oil change seems too short, even if you drive your car hard.

It finally dawned on me how much money I was spending on maintenance over the years(before I leased this BMW). In the past I have owned many cars and usually trade after one year or two years......but I still had the oil changed every 3000 miles, which was monthly (synthetic) and rotated and balanced the tires every 3000 miles, new air filter every 3000 miles, plus had it waxed every quarter by a shop.......knowing I would never keep the car very long.........and still would never get any more money on a trade-in for how much I took care of the car..........[?|] [?|] [?|]

I think overall it just made me feel safer. and broke..........[rofl]

Now for the lease, going with recommended dealer maintenance.....but I still have the tires balanced every 3000 miles........and using Big Daddy's recommendation on the fuel injector cleaner and gas booster stuff (which is weekly)........maybe at the end of my lease, somebody will want to buy my "very taken care of" car.........
