A masterclass in exhilarating power, sound, response and brilliant packaging that comes as standard,” says Japan-based journalist Peter Nunn. “Let’s celebrate advanced materials, mechanicals – and machismo,” encourages Dennis Simanaitis of Road & Track. The engine the two judges speak of is the Munich marvel that is the BMW 5-litre V10 – the International Engine of the Year 2006.

Indeed, this astonishing 4999cc unit has become the first engine in International Engine of the Year Awards history to complete back-to-back victories in the competition. The overall trophy for BMW means that the V10 has collected seven Awards in two years.

That's great! That subaru one is interesting though, the only category they won was the 2L-2.5L engine range. Which BMW came second with anyway. So much for just the beauty contest ha!
