Re: larger rear alloys than front...any known problems?

Hi All,

I hope you can helps with this. I am looking to purchase some alloys for my 7 Series- E38, which currently has 16inch Wheels. A friend of mine has a 540i, and has the 17 in alloys Im after- he's offered to give me them for a really good price, but can anyone clarify the following for me?

1. Does it matter the fact that the alloys came off a 540i instead of a 7 series?
2. More importantly, the set that my friend is offeringhas larger rears than the fronts...what are the implications of this?

Thanks,
Ismail

hey Ish, welcome aboard

1. i'm not sure what the offset is for those rims. if they are similar they should be ok.

2. having larger rears than fronts are called staggering, or staggered set up. many rear wheel drive cars, especially sporty ones/versions have fatter rears than fronts. they are nice, it gives more rubber to the wheel powering the car, so as to give more traction for the forward motion.
if there is one down side to the staggered set up, it is tire rotation. (non issue if your tires are directional in the first place, because you can't really rotate directional tires.) you can take your tires in to the store for balancing, but no acutal rotating.

I don't think the offset is the same between the E38 and the E39. I had an E38 and an E39 and I purchased new wheels for the E39. I remember trying to buy some E38 wheels but it was recommended not to do that.
