The money spent on the paint, wheels and accessories (not to mention the resources that were used to "create" this Prius) completely defeats the purpose of driving a Hybrid. It pisses me off!

I cannot count how many Hybrids we have here in Los Angeles (#1 in the world), and you see these a-holes racing around in the them, throwing their cigarettes out the window. It's such a joke. They don't give a rat's ass about the enviornment. A Hybrid for most people is no different than Paris Hilton's little, poor dog she schlepps around...an accessory!

And you forgot to mention the "pollution" caused during the making of a Hybrid and those batteries that need replacing every 5-8 years! Oh my where are we going to put them? We should ask Al Gore...hehe

^ I think we should send it to Yucca Mountain! ( Both Al Gore and the old batteries )

Actually the Hollywood A-Holes driving Toyotas has more to do with hating the USA, GM and Ford than being a enviro-Wacko. Its what the 911 used to mean (Image), nothing more.

Sorry Deutsch but its the truth.

I have to disagree Matthew. I know many, many people who own Hybrids (Prius, Civic and the Camry), and they do not hate the USA or American cars. They just want a car that gets as much mpg as possible (good for the enviornment, good for the wallet). My best friend is on her 2nd Hybrid, and her son is a Marine, currently serving in Iraq, and where she doesn't agree with the war, she is very proud of her son, and very proud of the USA. We must remember though, that the USA has MANY things to be proud of, but as with all countries, we have a lot to be ashamed about as well. I LOVE the USA, but again, as with all countries, the need for improvement is vast! On an end note, all of us on this board driving BMWS do not hate the USA or GM or Ford. We just choose to drive a foreign car that we really enjoy. I have said it for years...if GM, Ford or Chrysler could/would build a car that feels, drives and holds value as well as most Japanese cars or German cars...I'd buy one in a NY minute. It's just that, IMO, American cars are gross, plasticky and cheap feeling!

^ I'm talking about the Celebrities--Elites.
To some extent, I agree. Having a Hybrid is just a " look at me, I'm green" for some trend whore, B level "elite". For some celebs though, like Bill Maher, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Demi Moore, they really do care, and they try to show the public that you can have your Bluetooth, Navigation, park distance, leather, etc... and still get 33-50+ mpg while driving a Hybrid! To be cool, one doesn't need a Bentley, Escalade, Hummer, Range Rover, etc...

Well actually they don't because they are all socialist (we all know that goal).

They really don't get that "Good" of mileage. You want mileage get a V-DUB Diesel--far more impressive--no magic tricks.

Who wouldn't want a RR or Bently?

I agree, and have said for years!! clean diesel is the way to go. Imagine a diesel Hybrid! That would be amazing!

You must remember that 5 states won't allow the sale of diesel passenger cars, even though many are cleaner burning than a lot of new gasoline engines! I just read an article in the Swedish paper Dagens Nyheter and it showed how a new diesel Passat got about 800 miles on 1 fill up (creamed the Hybrid). Mercedes' new Bluetec Diesel with particle filter is SO clean, even the strict government of Sweden offers a tax break, on the usually high taxed diesels!

^ There is no need for a "Diesel Hybrid" - The V-Dub Polo gets 56 MPG already! Not to mention the Lupo which gets 75 MPGx!
I think 75mpg might be a little exxagerated, as I've driven a newer Lupo in Sweden & D-Land.

I think a diesel Hybrid is needed. Do we all want to drive a car the size of a rollerblade?? I don't want a Lupo, or even a Polo. Have a high speed accident on the Autobahn with a semi, or a 7 Series or S-Class in a Lupo...and all I have to say to you is Auf Wiedersehen! A Jetta or Passat diesel Hybrid (or better yet a 5er or E-Class diesel Hybrid) would give amazing mpg, in the safety of a real sized car!

The Great Global Warming Swindle--Its been all over Jabbasworld back in March.
it comes down to who's propaganda you subscribe to.
i've watched about 30+mins of this video's version.
interesting... while i'm not sure of the conculsion, its nice of the documentary so far to simplify such complex system.

^ Is it complex because it was MADE complex, its easier to sell something if you paint a simple picture on top and make the issue complex below--its what Al Gore has done.

Next Year BMW 535d, I can't wait--well maybe the X5 d first. How about a Mini Diesel?

Matthew, if it were so simple, how come forecasts are so wrong, so often? i'll tell you that is not all Al. even with doppler x-thousand blah blah tech!

anyway, back to the thread: as most would agree, prius and other eco-friendly anything are political statments. i have all the respect for those that do it for the right reasons, its just the dumb followers that thrive on spoon fed info.

while i won't buy an alternative fuel vehicle yet, i'm still open to the idea, once they start making something better than conventional gasoline varity with that makes less pollution. not to mention something not god-awful ugly!! look cool and save the environment? now that will be less painful to get ripped off on!!

don't know about others, but i'm not a fan of pollution. when i look out my window in Seoul, especially on a bright sunny day, the thick haze from pollution that covers the entire city just makes me realize how thankful i should be of the crisp air in michigan.

Because a forecast is only as accurate as the moron making up the numbers.

I can show you this chart and make you believe what ever the hell I want you to believe.

For Example The Chart below forecasts future growth in Penguin populations, T# represents the amount in thousands, P# represents generations of penguins.

Generations 6 I forecast a decline, but after that a serious growth once the 7th generation hits.

Pretty simple. And to think I just found that chart off Google Image Search!

Oh Matthew! I can talk until I am blue in the face (as you evidently can, as well :) I respect your right to an opinion, and think you're a cool guy, but I think your views are, er, wrong!

It just comes down to I'm a blue (er, green) Democrat that believes in Global Warming. I believe we are responsible, or somewhat responsible for the increasing temperatures, the numerous & devastating hurricanes, tsunamis, wildlife and marine life dying off, coral disappearing, waterways polluting and one of the worst (but ignored, and actually unknown thing) is that a lot of our bees are disappearing and/or dying. Even Albert Einstein said that a world without bees, and we wouldn't last very long! Our environment, increasing temps & pollution is affecting our bees. Are you aware, that roughly 70% of our food supply is dependent on bees pollinating?

It comes down to, you're a red Republican that doesn't believe in the majority of scientists, that support and believe in Global Warming. YES, I watched your video, and there are scientists and professors who do not believe in Global Warming, but they are in the world's minority. You don't accept the fact that Petroleum is NOT renewable, and depending on whose findings you believe, the world has anywhere from 20-50 years of petroleum left! Perhaps, you are even a "Bushie", and you believe the world will end soon, so use up whatever is there to be used. As a new Father, I don't view the world in only the "now". I want my kid, and his kids to have somewhat clean air, reasonable temperatures & weather and a world that is as clean & healthy as possible.

While I do not believe everything Al Gore preaches, I think the title of his Documentary really summarizes everything. If a lot of what he says is true, and what many, many countries worldwide believe is true....It really is An inconvenient Truth.

In regards to the Prius and Hybrids being Political statements, that might be true, but think about how much oil we would save, if we all drove cars that reached 45+ mpg. As cool as Range Rovers are, Escalades, 500+ hp sports cars, it is irresponsible of us to drive cars that only get 10-12 mpg.

Okay, I'm off my soapbox for this issue. I'll keep hoping that we all start to care more about our environment, than how quick we can go from 0-60 (even though, I admit...it's a hell of a lot of fun). I'm not saying I don't like these cars, I do, I have one....but we can all have a "main" car that is very eco responsible! [thumb]

May I offer my thanks to you gentlemen for discussing a very Volatile subject with respect for each other. While I am skeptical of gobal warming as defined by Al Gore I do recycle and do my part to not waste and or pollute. I believe we are in a natural cycle with some negative input from humanity, but far from the destruction of planet earth. I say buy a hybrid if you so desire but for now I am sticking with my roadster!

until we get morons off the forecasting business, i guess i'll keep a poncho, fleece and a short sleeve shirt w/ sun screen in my back seat [:D]

pointing fingers at each other and saying my views are correct is what we learn not to do in grade school. but who really learns from school anyway? i mean just look at the documentaries. [:p] i think this debate like so many holds answers somewhere in the middle. we should do what we can do preserve the environment. i'm not saying let's all be green peace, but i think every little bit helps. i sit somewhere in the middle between the elephant and the donkey.

as for hybrids, i'm sure i'll own more than one in my life time as tech improves. i'm not ready to pay that much of a premium yet tho. but just as i thought the day would never come 10 years ago, i think we've come a long way since EV-1. they'll only get better, and we may be rollin in hybrid bimmers sooner than later.
