I got the pressure plate and clutch off. Turns out it IS a single mass flywheel. The pilot bearing puller I rented doesnt fit (thanks autozone...). Any other way to remove it?

Also, do the flywheel bolts absolutely have to be replaced? Obviously I want to replace the rear main seal so the flywheel's got to come off.

Lastly, does the rear main seal have to be pressed in? Or is it something I can do myself?

Thanks.

HA!! I told you it was a single mass flywheel. People really should learn to listen to me. [fake]

How'd you end up getting the transmission out?

You shouldn't have to replace the flywheel bolts. Who told you that? Just be sure you torque them to the proper specs when you put them back in.

No idea about the rear main seal. I'm always leery about replacing seals like these when they aren't leaking. I replaced the rear main seal on my Camaro when I pulled the engine to do a cam swap just because it was easy to do at that point, and now it leaks like crazy. Would have been better off just leaving it alone. If you do replace it, make sure that everything is perfectly clean and make sure you lubricate the surface of the seal that rides on the crank.

Here's what mjbst111 posted (to your own previous thread, mind you - geez [read] ) about how to get a pilot bearing out without a puller:

As far as that pilot bearing goes... Instead of getting a puller, (I didn't know where to get one) i did this:

Get a long bolt that has a hex head on it just small enough to make it through the pilot bearing. Once the bolt head is behind the bearing, slide a nail in beside the bolt head so that the bolt head cannot come back out.

Get a piece of metal with a hole in it for the bolt to go through and put a nut on the bolt on the other side of the metal. The piece of metal should rest against something and when you turn the nut it will pull on the bolt pulling the pilot bearing out.

The bolt head cannot turn because the nail prevents it from turning thus has nowhere else to go other than to pull out the bearing.

You can probably find these things around the house. I did, it was free and it worked for me.

didn't the fly wheel bolts come in the kit?? I don't know if they absolutely have to be replaced. I put new ones in then ended up having to take the fly wheel off a second time. I did not buy new ones for the second time.

You just have to beat the rear main seal with a rubber mallet or such. The easiest way to get it in is to take off the flange that it sits in (or leave it in) and beat the new seal in using the old seal. You just flip the old seal around and put it up against the new one and make sure you are hitting it in absolutely evenly) Don't put it in too far either. (You will have to get a new gasket and put new gasket maker on the gasket if you take the flang off - kind of a pain but at least it makes sure the seal goes in correctly)

After tons of frustration with trying to get out that pilot bearing, my friend, brother and I came up with that technique jrt67ss350 posted. It worked incredibly well and easily. I just don't know if I explained it well enough or how to explain it. Good luck if you didn't have any luck with it yet.

I also heard that if you use only one of the parts of the kit they rent at autozone it can pull it out. (never saw the thing but heard it was possible and don't know details)

Got everything done minus the rear engine seal - I'll wait 2 years and replace it then (crazy, but i'm impatient! i need my car for college though).
