I posted a CG image of a proposed 3 Series folding convertible a few weeks ago. It looks like it is really in development - from Autoscoops (a Dutch site I visit):

Is that a hard top or soft top convertible? It looks like a hard top but I thought it's just almost impossible to make a hard top for those 4-seater convertibles.

Its about time BMW stepped into the hard tops.
i have to agree with you Tom, for years i have seen hard toped MB's are have been thinking of when will BMW create one, i really would like to see/own a hard top convertable, if BMW were to have a hard top currently then it would be the one i want, I like the control of a coupe and think it would be a more sporty look with teh hard top

What I like about hardtop convertibles is that the car actually looks like a respectable Coupe when the top is up. Also, the hard to retains heat/cold much better and keeps interior noise down. I strongly dislike the way typical soft top convertibles look with the top up. I know that convertible tops are great, but whenever I see a convertible during the winter, it just looks very out of place. I don't mind if the hardtop convertible eats into trunk space....hardtop convertibles provide so many pluses that it's worth it.

ya same with me...i mean when you would put the hard top down, at least for me, would be when im just driving around not carrying anything in my trunk and when i need the trunk space it would be up, i just hope this goes through and BMW will finally have a hard top convertible

I too think that looks like a soft top convertible with the optional hardtop...looks at how the top looks like it is just resting on the trunk and sides. We have had both the new SL and an SLK and the folding top looked nothing like in this pic.

I read somewhere that BMW has no problem builidng a 2-seater with a hard top, but does not think it is a good idea for a 4 seater. Look at the new CLK...it has a soft top with a glass window. MBZ def. has the know how in terms of building and perfecting a folding hard top...but it is just not a good idea for a 4 seater. My 2 cents.

The problem is that it's just im possible to do! How you can you make that super long roof and longer full rear window of a Coupe, fold up into little pieces into your trunk??? I don't think it is doable unless they use some crazy-ass collapsing roof or something.
