Opinions Needed

Hello Everyone,

I am not new to BMW, but new to this forum.

I need some honest opinions...quickly!!!

Currently, I am driving a 2003 745i. This is one terrific machine, cruising at 120 with no effort whatsoever and looking pretty good in just about any situation.

My problem, if you can call it that, is that I never really wanted to own a 7 series in the first place. A strange set of circumstances led me to three years of driving pleasure absent of disappointment.

At this time I have found a 2006 550i and a 750i in the color I need.

For background I am a 39 year-old, married, athletically active, professional father of three teenagers. But I still like to drive like a teenager.

I appreciate any useful advice you can give. Which car should I choose?

Keep the car teenagers? Buy a convertible new/used and drive like a teenager?

Get the 2006 550i, you said you like to drive like a teenager, the 550 will give you a better chance to do that. Or you could always buy a cheap used van and get an M3!

If you don't need the extra space, get the 550. Less weight means better handling.

I'm in the same situation as you - I wanted a 3 series to build up for autox or something, and in general wanted a smaller car. Looked for a long time, but ended up with a 5. The 5 is a dream on the highway and is an absolutely great car, handles well and has great power. But - I am still disappointed because it is so big. I want to keep it since its such a nice car, but I want to get rid of it because I would rather have a 3. It's a pretty hard decision.

The teenagers worry me. As such, I'd avoid getting a coupe. I'd go with the 550 too. I agree, you're still too young for the 7 series. A doctor I know has a 7 series. He's not too much older than me. I'd have said something, but he drives all slow and mainly uses it as a status symbol cuz it's the biggest sedan BMW makes. It's not like he needs the space as he's only got a toddler and a baby.

Thank you all for the reinforcement of my thoughts. All of your input is much appreciated.

I am going to get my 550 tomorrow. Maybe I will post some pics.

Incidentally, I really wanted to get an M5, but they don't import it to the US in the color I need to have. At least that is what my dealer told me. The European and worldwide BMW site appears to offer a lot more personalization options; colors and trim that we can not get here in the states. I might have to move in a couple of years if the 550 doesn't satisfy me.

Call around and see what dealers are willing to order a BMW Individual car for you. Well, you're not gonna get a M5 in a day, but it might be good info later on if you decide to get an M5. It can be done. People have ordered Individual cars in the US before. The problem is finding a dealer willing to do it and who knows how.

For a price (was $2000 maybe $2500 now) they will build a BMW in what ever color you want and they make. All you have to do is have a BMW special ordered and pay up.....

Oh yeah............ don't forget the M kit as well, there is a forest green 550i on post here with the m kit and it makes me horny (can I say that????)
