Quick question guys....I was changing my oil yesterday which I have done several times except that this time while tightening the oil drain plug it snapped in two!!!!. I've purchased a replacement but my question is - the other half of the drain plug is still in the pan and I can't get it out. My question is, has anyone experienced this problem before? And how do I get the piece out?

Thanks
A.K

Realistically you have two options:

1. Remove the oil pan (will make a mess if there is oil in it so lay some sheet rock or plastic to prevent spillage). Drill threw the old stud. Retap the plug. Get a new Oil Plug.

2. Remove the oil pan. Buy a replacement oil pan and use that.

*NOTE: you will need a new gasket either way.

It's for this precise reason that one should periodically replaced the oil plug and NOT over tighten. I buy a new plug every 3 years and I always tighten that plug to a shade above spec (I find spec to feel too loose).

Negative,
Get a small pin punch and lightly hammer the plug counter clockwise until you get 1 or 2 threds proud, then use multigrips to turn it the rest of the way out.
If you take your time and do nut damage the outer threads or the sump itself you could be lucky. you shouldent need to take the sump off.

A sump plug does not hold big end caps in place, abit past a nip is all you need, and if you want to be more pedantic use thread tape... it doesn't hurt

Im a first year aprentice, and on my 1st day on the job i snapped a sump plug in a brand new TD volvo truck, i used this method, worked a treat!

good luck

Doughnut's suggestion sounds pretty good.

I would not try to drill it and use an extractor. Drilling it could spin it clockwise and drop it inside the pan.

I gave up and had it towed to an auto shop. They were able to remove it using the drilling method and everything is fine now.

Why do you think I'd need a new gasket?

Thanks for all the suggestions guys
