TOKYO (Dec. 2, 2005)-- Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., has developed the world’s first clear paint that repairs scratches on painted car surfaces, including scratches from car-washing machines, off-road driving and fingernails.

“Scratch Guard Coat” contains a newly developed high elastic resin that helps prevent scratches from affecting the inner layers of a car’s painted surface. With “Scratch Guard Coat” a car’s scratched surface will return to its original state anywhere from one day to a week, depending on temperature and the depth of the scratch.

The water-repellant paint also has a higher resistance to scratches compared with conventional clear paints. A vehicle painted with “Scratch Guard Coat” will have only one-fifth the abrasions caused by a car-washing machine compared with a car covered with conventional clear paint. Scratches from car-washing machines account for the majority of scratches to painted car surfaces.

“Scratch Guard Coat” is effective for about three years.

“Scratch Guard Coat” will be applied for the first time on an SUV model that is scheduled for a partial makeover in the near future. The paint will be applied to the car’s chassis, bumpers, door mirrors, among other parts.

Sounds like a good invention, I wonder if it works on the marks the small rocks make when they get kicked up by the tractor trailors and dump trucks (especially the dump trucks).

Nice. If it works and holds up, this will be standard on cars in 5 years. Remember when only high end cars got clear coat? Now every car gets clear coat.

Yeah, Nissan really needs this. Their paint jobs are absolute shit.
Most paint on cars now-a-days sucks becuase of the ban of the chemicals that made paint very good in the 80's. The paint on both my e30 and e34 has held up WORLDS better than most E36's (like spidering paint, rust spots on the truck lid, etc.)

FROLF: I'm not bashing the e36 [rolleyes]

The paint on my E34 didn't hold up very well. The clear coat fell off.

Sounds like it's kind of a gooey elastic type deal, where it's not completely dry, per se, so it can move back to fill the shape, maybe? I wonder if the length of time it takes to fix itself gets longer over time; ie it gradually loses its elasticity.

The lanyard on my phone has a little gem thing that does the same thing. I know because I dig my nail into it and put gouges in it, which are gone the next time I play with it.

Anyway... Stream of consciousness.

If it repairs itself then the coating must remain more fluid than solid. DO you think it might trap debris more? I wonder if small particles would become embedded in the paint then get covered over by the coating.

I disagree abotu e34's. My e34 has absolutely the worst paint ever. It looks liek my car has been drenched in acid rain for the past 5 years.
And what year is it? Did you read the entire thread? It's not a matter of being an E34, an E32, or an E30. Any car built after 91/92 has the newer paint that doesn't hold up like the old stuff.
