While I doubt anyone here will be directly affected, and I hate spinners, this is a bad precedent. What gets banned next - angel eyes?

I'd rather that they revoke the drivers licenses of people who install spinners, LOL!

"New York state is considering legislation to ban the use of "spinner" wheels and hubcaps. S.B. 1640 was reintroduced in the New York State Legislature by State Senator John Sabini. The law would subject vehicle owners to fines of up to $750 for a third or subsequent violation. The bill has been referred to the Senate Transportation Committee."

I agree Kirby, but they cannot revoke a DL unless a violation occurs. I have long thought the things were dangerous, someone could loose a finger or a hand, and they are a lot of unsprung weight in the event of a sudden stop or an accident.

Ban power windows, someone could lose their head. Sunroofs, someone could lose their finger, ban fanbelts, and power antennas... Come on now.... what is the reason for them to ban spinners? if you're sticking your finger in there, you're probably better off having your finger broken than the second degree burn you'll get from touching the brakes. Unsprung weight is the last thing people worry about on their Suburbans and Hummers. What do they weight? 800tonnes?

Ban those stupid rice rocket plastic wings, I'm always affraid they'll fly off the car.

Yes, it's noones style on this board, but still, what's the "legal" problem with them? Do people think the car is still moving or something?

Not many kids can walk up to a parked or stopped car and stick their heads or hands into a fan belt (hoods are closed) or window, but anyone can walk up to a stopped Escalade and stick his or her finer in a spinner that weighs 10 -15 pounds. There have been occassions where they have broken off and damaged property, I have not heard of a person yet, but who knows. I am not arguing in favor of writing a law against it, but in this case NY is or has and I say ok. And no they do not weigh 800 tons!

And you oppose banning spinners but support banning wings, your logic does not hold up here, why not leave each alone or ban both using your own arguements?

Here's the reason - somebody thinks spinners deceive the "Viewer" and will cause an accident:

"This legislation is intended to prevent automobile accidents caused by hubcaps that are designed to deceive other motorists into believing the vehicle is moving, or traveling at a rate of speed different than the actual speed of the vehicle. While the design and use of devices known, as “spinners” is benign, the use of these devices on public roads can cause accidents resulting in serious injury or death. The sole purpose and design of spinners are to provide the illusion of movement of the vehicle’s wheels and to thereby deceive persons into believing the vehicle is moving at a rate of speed greater than the actual speed of the vehicle, including when the vehicle is stopped. Unfortunately, this otherwise innocent deception can result in other motorists misjudging the rate of speed of the vehicle equipped with “spinners”, and can result in the other motorist taking actions based on the perceived but misleading speed of the other vehicle."

400 tonnes?

I'm joking about the wing... my point being exactly what you said. Anyhow, I guess you can misjudge the rate of speed, maybe, but why is this just in NY? All the other states and all of Canada are okay with them. It seems like its a waste of time and money trying to pass a bill through legislature to ban wheels.

Oh beleive me if New York passes it others will follow. Personally I wish the states would spend more time passing balanced budgets and taking their hands out of my pockets, that would impress me!

Not really for me to comment, but that won't stop me!
Its not really a good thing when modifications are banned, isn't that a way of expressing yourself in chrome?... Even though people that have them are quite likely "Chavs"
Has it got something to do with people sueing people because they lost their fingers?...

Although I doubt that many people will have spinners on BMW's and quite frankly if anyone was simple enough to stick their finger in a spinner, not only deserves to loose their finger, but deserves a slap as well!.

Maybe those that have them should sharpen them up, that should REALLY give them something to sue about!

Like I said before, I know of no case of this, but also know kids , children will do some dumb things, but to say they "deserve it" and a "slap" is extreme negligence and insensitivity.
