I almost bought the outgoing model of this car. Nice, but not a bimmer! It is to be announced at the Frankfurt Show in September.

"The new C70 is thought to be the first four-seat folding hard top car to be launched into the premium market, though we expect VW to reveal a Golf-based car this year too. The new car further develops Volvo's established design language, with a strong resemblance to the Volvo S40 at the front and strong 'shoulders'. At the rear, the lights feature a new double-circle shape, which is bound to make it into the rest of the range eventually. The side profile remains elegant with the roof up or down, and no doubt buyers will be thankful for the extra security of the hard top.

Engine options will include a 180bhp, five-cylinder diesel, a 2.4-litre petrol five-cylinder producing 170bhp and the range-topping T5, with another five-cylinder unit pumping out 220bhp and 236lb.ft of torque. "

Reminds me of the E46:

The thing I like about Volvo is how they do their own thing and don't care about what other people think, and it doesn't matter because people still buy them -- partly because they like them and mostly because there a womens car.

You're right, they have always done their own thing, and done it well. *So far* Ford has pretty much left them alone to continue their "mission". They do build a good car - the bimmer replaced a 740 that we had almost 200K miles on. Keeping up with the HP race has never been a major concern of Volvo.

I have a friend who has an SC80 and she loves it, accelerates well, well built, minor problems the other brand I like is Saab, (I know it’s a GM), but they do some pretty creative things, the 9-5 is one hell of a car I’d take it over the 5 series, except for the fact that it is front wheel drive, and best of all, when you turn your air conditioning on you can also turn another switch on to pump air into the glove box and keep stuff cool, pretty clever.

This is a very nice looking car. I too have always liked Volvo. You are correct Dan, Volvo's have always been one of the safest cars in the world to drive. I agree with Matthew too. Saab makes a very good car. I had a friend who traded in their Audi A4 for 9-5 and they love it....

I'm glad they appear to have fixed the C70 cowl shake problem. It was a major reason I didn't buy it, the bimmer is so much tighter and stronger.

From the web site:

The body structure, in a carefully designed network of beams, not only contributes to the car’s high safety standards, it also gives the body extremely high torsional rigidity – twice as high as that of the previous C70 Convertible. With the roof up, torsional rigidity is increased by an impressive 10-15 percent over the convertible.

“A torsionally rigid body is important to the car’s ride and handling traits,” says C70 project manager Patrik Widerstrand. “It makes the car more stable and easier to control. It also makes the car more dynamic and fun to drive.” In the U.S. the all-new Volvo C70 will be powered by 2.5-liter in-line five-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 218 hp and offers 236 lb.-ft. of torque.

i like the way the new direction volvo is taking, or has taken recently. s60r is sweet! however, evertime i swing by a volvo dealership. i see a line of volvos trying to get serviced out the door. in fact at one of the dealerships in the area, volvo is also owned by a group that has saab. even the saab garages are packed with volvos, waiting to be fixed. is this an anomaly, or a new horrid tred volvo stared on after being acquired by ford?

I am really curious to see this folding hardtop, how it works, and how it looks when the top is up. I love convertibles to death, but I can't stand how most soft tops look with the top up during the winter months.
