Some of that hoodline is supposedly due to the new EU requirements for pedestrian hood impact (I kid you not!). There is a new requirement to have some amount of clearance, an inch or two, between the hood and the engine compartment. The idea is that if you hit a pedestrian, the hood will absorb the impact somewhat, instead of causing more harm.
Usually I think European countries have a good balance of sensibilty, liabilty and safety, but this law just seems a little excessive to me. I mean, the bumper will smash a pedestrian''s legs, the windshield/roof smashes their head.... hood impact seems like a minimal concern in the grand scheme.
