"Just as BMW announces details of its own new M5 (see separate news story), closely allied aftermarket tuner and high-performance specialist Alpina has launched its B7 saloon. As its name indicates, this is based on the BMW 7-Series, but like the M5, it has 500bhp and a similar 516lb ft torque output. Acceleration 0-60mph comes up in 4.8 seconds, and top speed is 186mph. This power hike to the BMW 4.4-litre V8 is down to the addition of BMW's own compressor, which actually boosts fuel efficiency as well, to 22.1mpg. Alpina claims that "with 700Nm of torque available from 3000rpm to 6000rpm, the effect on performance is staggering - a seamless, near-linear build-up to maximum speed." The B7 should be a bit more civilised than the high-revving, more race-car like M5, however, in keeping with the 7-Series' luxury-car status. It will also not feature BMW's new seven-speed SMG transmission, but a six-speed auto 'box with steering wheel-mounted paddleshifts. Alpina will also offer its usual range of accessories and options, including a full bespoke leather interior. Prices start from £76,900, and the B7 - along with the other Alpina models, the Z4-based Roadster and B3 saloon, coupe and convertible - is available via Sytner Group dealerships in the UK. "
