I saw a large amount of smoke coming out my exhaust, so I took it into BMW.

Here's the verdict from the "BMW Dealer":

The oil seperator is done. $946 parts and labor

oil got on the o2 sensors - $680 parts and labor.

Fouled the Plugs - $345 parts and labor.

Oil Change - $85 parts and labor.

Oil killed the Converters, they're rattling? $3000

Opinions, suggestions to make this price as low as possible?

thanks

You can change the plugs, O2 sensors yourself, buying the parts on the net for far less. Take it to an independent BMW shop rather than a dealer, that will save $$. Change the converters later again buying off the net. I am not sure what kind of a job the seperator is. Are we talking about your 540?

Yes, it's for the 540.

I'm looking into another shop. I hope I can find a good one. I can do the converters later.

anyone have any friends or a shop on the east coast in MD?

You could cut the cost in 1/4 by taking it to a good independent mechanic - find one that specializes in european cars. There are a few around here too (Lancaster and harrisburg area).

You'll ABSOLUTELY get a better repair job from an independent dealer becuase an independent mechanic's reputation is based on the quality of his work and his pricing. A dealer will always have $$ coming in wether it's warranty work or people who THINK the dealer is the place to go.

Yowwwzza, you 're getting hosed.

Don't know anything about the oil separator, but that is ALOT.

O2 sensors - Bosch OEM from AutoHausAZ - $70 - $125 each, plus 2 - 3 hours at the most for installation.
Plugs - under $40 for a set, labor should be no more than 1 - 1.5 hours.
Converters - can be purchased new aftermarket for $150 - $300 each.

You need to get another price before dropping this kind of money!!!!

94 Silverbullet,

Where abouts MD are you?

There is an awesome shop in Towson, MD. It's called "Autobahn of Towson" It's at the corner of Stevenson Road & York Road.

They do great work, and they're reasonably priced.

410-583-1200

I would call them up, and just ask them how much they would charge for that work, and then have them inspect it.

Good Luck

I need to get in on this scam

Thats over a grand for what amounts to less than $150 of OEM parts and labor that would take less than 30 minutes. well, 30 mins on an e30, but I can't imagine that the plugs or o2 sensor is that hard to get to on your 5 series.

I'm around Gaithersburg/Rockville, MD

I took the car to an independant dealer in my area. I'll see what the verdict is. I'll keep Autobahn of Towson in mind. Thanks.
