The ML is being a little overused, and the Disco is unreliable and delivers horrid fuel economy. I want to get a car for around a grand to get me to school and just around, it has to have a manual tranny, and rear wheel drive. I am at the constant look out for early nissan 240sx's, they go for around 600-1500 depending on condition they're in. What I need to figure out is what other cars for around the same price and setup are out there. I dont want a front wheel drive car, I might as well have fun while I am driving a heap.

My original plans to get a roadster fell apart due to investment into my career into being a commerical pilot, therefore money is tight, but I need a car to get around. Any ideas appreciated.

Arent E30's and E34's a little pricey to maintain?
E30s aren't if you get one that hasn't been neglected its whole life. Mine's been a really good car for me with mainly just the usual, expected types of things that have needed to be replaced, and mine has higher miles than most (300k). If you do the work yourself, E30s aren't bad at all.

Can't be as expensive to maintain as an AMG ML or a Land Rover. Plus, you'll be hard pressed to find many cars for about $1000 that aren't going to need some kind of work.

A friend of mine just bought a '96 240sx and after the trip home I let him drive my '95 325, I got a lot of complements about my car and he said that if he could, he would have gotten a bimmer instead. His 240 was actually a lot of fun but something tells me that if you can get a bimmer instead, you should go for it. Plus, the e30s are known to be a little tail happy so you shouldn't be too bored with it, if you know what I mean.

Anyway, have fun with whatever you get, hope you don't like the beater you get more then the two SUVs and get attached to it. [hihi]

MkII or Mk III Toyota Supra would be a great car to beat around with. Can get that for around 1500 or 2k. They'll run for ever and they really aren't that thirsty. Fun engines to mod. They really are fun car, and the mark II is a fun little drifter.

Have fun with whatever you get!

Yeah.. I read that the electronic on that car are complete POS, I almost bought a Black 944.. Then I read all about that cars problems, wouldnt have been a fun car too.
Well if the problems I have read and seen with Bimmers are any indication then it shouldnt be a big deal(beater remember?).....as long as the engine is sound, the horn, lights and turn signals work......and it IS a Porsche....you can always get a late model(so-called) like a 92 or 93....or up your price a bit and get a 968...I have been seriously thinking of getting a RWD beater too and it was funny that you just happened to open this thread......Dont get the Supra because they are automatic and have a history of head gasket problems......easy to get more HP out of though.....

Most mkII were manual (at least the ones sold in this country). Mk III & Mk IV had a fair amount of autos, but also a fair amount of Manuals...you just have to look.

The head gasket issues were usually limited to the 7MG-E or the 7MGT-E (MKIII), and most of the SUpras you'll find for sale will already have had them replaced if its 100k+ mileage.

Yeah you may be right.....all the ones I have seen here are Supra 3.0 Turbo's(Mk III???) and have had automatics......still considered getting one...I just hate automatics though...too many bad memories and I like to have full control of the car...

Every engine ever put in a supra has been a 3.0L

The Supra from its inception in 1979 has had the following engines; each one being a 3.0L:
4M-E (1979-80) [MKI Supra]
5M-E (1981-5) [MK I & II]
7MG-E (1985.5-92) [MK III]
7MG-TE (1987-92) [MKIII - turbo]
2JZG-E (1993-1998) [MKIV]
2JZG-TE (1995-1998) [MKIV - turbo]

Toyota's Automatics have a great reputation for durability; granted it makes the car boring to drive.

tsk, tsk. They're a blast to mess around with. Especially with a spare engine you could build to your desires on the side.

He doesn't still have it, does he?
