My parents got in an accident

So, almost two weeks ago, my dad got in an accident in my parents' 2002 Impala LS. He was taking my sister and one of her friends to a birthday party/sleepover when some guy in a 2003 Acura TL pulled out right in front of him. My dad swerved, but the guy made contact at the passenger front wheel and ended up scraping down most of the length of the side of the car. The other guy was cited as at fault. Thankfully, nobody was hurt in either car. The airbags deployed in the Impala, but amazingly, they did not deploy in the Acura.

You can clearly see the body damage to the Impala in the pictures below, most of which is pretty self-explanatory. It appears that the impact to the front wheel broke the lower ball joint at the least, pushing the wheel back and bending the strut and possibly damaging the CV joint on that side. Interestingly, the sunroof popped up as a result of the airbag deployment and is now jammed and won't close. The damage to the Impala really doesn't look that bad, but the car has been totaled by the insurance company. My dad has spent the past week and a half fighting the Acura driver's insurance company to at least get Kelley blue book value for the car since the car was in absolutely excellent condition. The have refused to budge, and my parents finally had to accept their offer for about $1000 less than KBB value for the car since they simply cannot go any longer without a car.

My parents are going to buy a new 2006 Impala LTZ. The pictures below are of the actual car they will be coming to pick up this Saturday. I found this car at another dealer about 40 minutes away from me and had it transferred to my local Chevy dealer for them. I looked at other cars for them, but they can't really afford anything more expensive than about $28k, and they need a car with a very large trunk, leather, heated front seats, and sunroof. There really isn't too much else in that segment of the market equipped the way this car is for that price. I told my parents to strongly consider a new Charger R/T, but my mom hates the front end styling of that car.

The 2006 is definitely a nicer car than their previous bodystyle 2002. While the car is still built on the GM W body, the suspension is firmer and tighter with improved shock valving, the interior is definitely higher quality but still includes a lot of plastic, the interior is tons quieter, the leather is much higher quality, and the exterior styling, while plain, is more modern looking. The new car is a fully loaded car with all available options including 6 disc in-dash CD changer. The car also has a Bose stereo and 17 inch wheels that weren't available in their previous car. The LTZ comes with GM's brand new 3.9 liter V6 with variable valve timing and variable intake manifold that produces 242 hp and 242 lb-ft. This naturally aspirated engine produces 2 hp more than the supercharged 3800 that required 91 octane gas. The new engine has a very nice sound with a pretty nice exhaust note. I drove a new SS, and that thing was damn fast and sounded sweet. My parents considered an SS, but some research on my part showed that alot of people are getting real world mileage of about 12 mpg in mixed driving with 91 octane gas. That wasn't going to fly.

Ouch on the car, the Acura seemed like it sustained way more damage than your dad's.

The 2006 Impala is definitely better than the old, I rented one last month and it was a blast driving to LA. Very comfortable in addition to having a good amount of horsepower. You guys will be really happy with the purchase.

that dash got pulled up like that from the air bag??
Yeah - the dash is designed so that if the airbags deploy, you only have to replace the airbag module and the dash top piece which just attaches with a few bolts. It doesn't destroy the rest of the dash when the airbags deploy like what happens in a lot of cars.

I'm surprised the airbags went off from the direction of the hit, but at least you know they work, :)

You know I have been saying for years how HORRIBLE "Japanese Car Drivers" are; meandering lanes, no turn signal, running stop signs, etc. this just reinforces that statement.

One more thing to knock about the UnAcura, I thought Japanese cars were built so well, I thought they didn't have problems, Pleehy! That Honda's engine could be through the dash and that crumby airbag wouldn't have gone off, Built well, ha ha ha.

Sorry to hear about your rents car though, at least they are ok and came out with a new vehicle, and thanks for the quick review of the Impala, I have to say GM has come a long with their cars in “recent” years, even that stereo looks more modern and quality all around, I just hope the stock goes up.

well first of all i am happy there were injuries in both cars. that is the most important thing as damages to cars can be fixed with money, but injuries have a far deeper impact.

and that car really got hit badly. from the first read i thought you got away with a scratch. somehow the description made me think so, but that was already more than a small accident. even better that all are well.

Japanese cars and especially German cars are designed to deform and take the impact of the accident. When we were hit a 1.5 years ago in our 4.4i X5...the car was totaled, and looked like a semi hit it. The car takes the blunt of the force. The Acura looking the way it does, is how it is supposed to look.

My e30 didn't deform at all! It was like a steel beam going through an audi.

True, but the airbags still should have deployed.....

My point exactly. They are no better than the Chevy.
I don't share your views on the build quality of Asian auto manufactures. They along with American manufactures are not the only automobiles that have had airbags fail. However, everyone has the rights to their own opinions....

*EDIT* spelling....

Hey Abdoman, care to expand on your statement, "BMWs are less reliable", I'm in the market for an '06 325xi and I'm researching the pros and cons.

I'm not sure what he means either. I have driven 50k+ miles between my 3 BMW's (which was a 182k mile E30, 137k mile E34, and now a 101k mile E36 M3).

Never had a single problem other than a failed coil in my e34. My fault for neglecting the maintainence. If a new BMW is less reliable than the old ones, then BMW wouldn't be in business. You're just going to pay a little more for maintainence.

The pro's are:
One of the best driving best engineered cars you will find.

Cons are:
Expensive repairs (out of warranty repairs)

I'm not saying that BMWs are not reliable, I said they are less reliable. No way BMW beats Honda on reliablility. Here's what I told my brother-in-law (he finally bought a BMW). He's been jacking around and purchased several cars, Honda Accord, Ford Taurus, Honda Accord, Audi A6 AWD over about five years. I told him - you can buy a Honda and you won't spend as much money on repairs as you will a BMW, but you won't like driving it as much and trade it in much sooner than if you bought a BMW.

A couple of months ago he finally broke down and bought a 03 325i. He called me up after a month and said, "I see why you always told me to buy one. I probably will just keep trading for Bimmers. Its a great car. I can't believe the way it takes corners."

BMW = slightly more repair costs = much, much better driving fun
Honda= great reliability = boring to drive

my cars were
96 Z3(30k), 95 325(115k), 95 740i (135k), 97 328is (65k) and 97 528i (139k)

Good thing you got the 06 Impala rather than the 05 one. I like the updates they did. Just curious why they didn't consider the Pontiac? Looks? Is it much smaller?

While the Grand Prix is built on the same W body chassis as the Impala, its packaging makes for a smaller car. I'm not sure how the "numbers" compare, but in the real world the trunk is much smaller and with less usable space than in the Impala and the interior feels more cramped and smaller than the Impala. My fiancee has a '97 Grand Prix GTP. My parents have driven it in the past and didn't like it compared to the room in the Impala.

It basically just came down to personal preference for them. Plus, the Grand Prix still gets the old 3.8 V6 (naturally aspirated in the base and supercharged in the GT) while the Impala LTZ has the new 3.9 V6 with variable valve timing.
