My HK sounds weaker than normal

I've got a 2004 330i ZHP with the HK Audio package. The audio sounded awesome (for a stock stereo) until a few days ago. It just sounds flatter, and the bass response isn't there. Well mastered CDs like DMB sound flat, and punchy-bass like lil-jon sounds like I have the loudness button turned off (not the case).

Things I've checked:

  • It's not the loudness button - duh
  • The speakers independently sound fine as I fade/bal to each separately. I know what a blown speaker sounds like, and they don't "buzz" or rattle - they just sound like a cheaper stereo.

Is there a fuse for the subs? Could the amp/head unit be burned out? I find it hard to believe that the system can't support windows-down, freeway loudness.

Anyone had this happen before? Thanks in advance.

You shouldnt be having any problems. take it to the dealer, it should be under warrenty right? or is that not covered?

for future reference...don't trust audio upgrades with any car manufacturer. take it to a GOOD stereo place (do some research), that carries GOOD products (do some research), and invest what you would have paid in the upgrade into somthing there. i garuntee you that you wont have these kinds of problems, and if you do, good car audio shops implement awesome warrenies, covering your stuff as long as no one touched any connection, etc. besides them. plus, some stuff you can buy there is better than HK, IMO. (depending on the brand).

Yeah, it's covered - I just don't trust the dealer to be able to tell the difference between the original sound quality and the current sound "quality".

Checked the fuses (7/41) - both are in good condition. Each speaker sounds strong, except the subs which sound pretty soft. When a coil goes in the speaker, is it a total failure, or is there diminished response?

I. myself, am too in love with the factory look of the dash to put a custom head unit in, but I do see your point. The car came with the HK included - I'd gladly have traded that option for fold-down rear seats. Such is life.

yeah, theres always a sacrifice somewhere. if the subs coil goes...you'll KNOW it. it'll clank around like a fire alarm bell. the amp MIGHT go into protection if it shorts, either way..you'll lose the bass, or you'll here the noise.

how long have you had the car? it could still be braking in. although it shouldnt sound quiter. softer, smoother, tighter, yes....quiet no.

4 months and 4000 glorious miles. It'll be in the shop next week for the classic 330 ZHP rough-idle issue, and I'll have them take a listen then.
