Motor Trend: 335 vs G37 - The King is Dead!

Let the flame war begin!!

The August issue of Motor Trend tested the 335i vs the Infniti G37, and declares "The King is Dead" (BMW 3 series of course). HOWEVER, in the on track tests the 335i beat the Infiniti in every category!!!!!!! They gave the Nissan the "victory" because of a hot oil temperature issue on the 335i - which they even acknowledge that BMW will fix at no cost!!!!
[screwy]

Even some of the guys on a Nissan forum where this was announced are flaming Motor Trend. This from a Nissan owner:

First, the absolutely pathetic excuse for comparing "slushboxes" that Motor Trend quotes: they are more "popular". For crap's sake, you Motor Trend idiots, you are comparing two performance oriented coupes (not the more "popular" sedans or some Camry/Accord lookalike) that cater more to the "enthusiast" buyer. And then you do the test of slushbox against slushbox and actually think any serious enthusaist gives a crap? Save the trees and stop printing such garbage.

But, guess what, the BMW still wins in EVERY single performance category. Acceleration, skidpad, braking (tie actually). And it gets almost 20% better gas mileage. Pretty easy to see who the "winner" is in this slushbox comparo from my seat.

Oh, but wait, the BMW costs $8k more than the Infiniti. Well, I hate to break it to those MT rocket scientists, but if you take BMW's 20% better fuel economy, BMW's included maintenance and BMW's much better resale value there is NO real difference in cost over 4-5 years. But that's way above their math skills.

As best I can tell, the marketing department of Nissan paid Motor Trend, big time, for a complete BS comparison. If they didn't, they should send Motor Trend a big box of chocolates. Too bad, because I would have actually liked to see an honest, unbiased comparison of the G37 coupe against the 335i coupe equiped the way anyone who really wants to DRIVE these cars would - with a manual transmission. And without some assinine concluding comment like "considering the micro performance margins and macro price differential".

MT needs to take a macro walk off a micro pier on this one. Utter crap.

I just bought an 06' G35 and the only reason I purchased it was price. It's hard to pony up the extra money (close to 9k) to buy the Bimmer, especially when the G35 does handle very well. I like the Bimmer better without question.

I drove a 330, and a 335 and man, was the 335 fun. I can't say it handled better than the G35 but the feedback through the steer wheel on the 335 felt perfect. The G35 feels numb.

That magazine article is what prompted me to post here again. I wanted to read what other guys on here were thinking as well. I recently bought a 335i, and just before I did, I test drove the 07 G35 just to see if I was missing out on anything -- and I think the answer is a definitive no!! The G35 (which was also auto though my car is stick) was noticeably more sluggish, and the plastics and build quality were no match for the BMW. Additionally, my G35 demo had only 7000 miles on it, yet shakes and rattles (my biggest pet peeve) over severe road irregularities were already quite noticeable. Both the demo 330 I drove and my current 335i were/are 100% squeek and rattle free. Case in point: resale value. Slightly used, well-equipped 07 G35s are already selling for less than 30K....try picking a 335i with 7000 miles on it for less than 42.

How MT can arrive at this conclusion escapes me, completely. I canceled my subsription a long time ago to MT, and now I remember why. With this cover and story, I think the writers want to shock readers more than inform them. Hey, any mildly informed car buff couldn't walk past this cover without giving a sneak peak at the grocery store. Am I right?? Yellow-dog journalism for the 21st century.

Clearly, not much has changed with time.
Infiniti = value
BMW = quality

Don't give me any BMW cost-of-ownership and resale value bullshit. The BMW is more expensive, but you get what you pay for.

I would lease a 335i for 3 or 4 years but I would buy the Infiniti for 4+ years.
