Ha.

The article says...."Ford Motor's Jaguar X-Type, which is also on our list, is an example of overreaching in the opposite direction: Jaguar has run into problems by building a vehicle that is too cheap and high-volume given the company's prestigious history."

What will they be saying of the 1 and 2 series a year or so from now?

I don't know if I agree. I had I chance to sit in a Phaeton recently and I was supremely impressed. If the I had the money right now, I would have seriously consider buying one, not just because the interior finishings are exemplary, but also for the exclusivity. Sure, the seats, dash, and trim are all grade A+ (I like buttons), but the fact that you don't seen Phaetons everyday is what makes them so awesome. And we you do see you one, especially from the rear with its beautiful behind (replete with the big VW logo), people start looking. Oh, and that thick rear pillar is nice looking. I ldon't know about those people at MSNBC, but I like the idea of a "boutique nameplate."

While the article mentions the Phaeton's lack of sales as a detraction, I view it as a plus. Like this Edmunds.com article says, "If you're looking for a particularly spacious and luxurious sedan that won't immediately lump you in with every stockbroker and mortgage banker in town, the Phaeton could be your ticket."

The Phaeton could definitely be my $95,000 ticket, any day.

Then your rich butt gets to join the herds waiting for service, with your $95,000 car jockeying for position with $15,000 Golfs. That's as you see your buddy who bought a very similar Audi cruise up and get luxury dealer service while enjoying his free maintenance that most luxury brands are offering now.

I see lots of these new VW's here in Germany (Imagine that...Hmmm) I like their new "broad stance" they look aggressive, but to much like and Audi A8. Make a nice car but, at least make it original.

I drove a Phaeton when they firt came out! (perks of being a valet at Mortons of Chicago!)> Ill tell you what out of all of the lexus' and Mecedes and even a couple Bentlys. The Phaeton is by far the best built and the best looking out of the ~$100K bunch If I won the lottery I would lay down the cash and roll in a W12 Phaeton! Because you dont see them every day I think is a good thing because it is such a true luxo cruser.

So why weren't you one of the four people that bought one this year?

Got help us from these company marketers. My bad, if you're a regular guy. In that case, I would humbly suggest you need to get out and see some more cars maybe. Some taste wouldn't kill anyone either.

I have seen and sat in a Phaeton and I love it. The quality is top notch and it is soo confortable. For them to call it a overhyped car is terrable. VW even admited that they never expected the first one to be a hit. VW has stated that they dont expect to take a profit on the Phaeton until its 3rd generation. From what I seen that is a good estimate.

I rarely see Phaetons, but I do remember over the winter, during the snow storms, I always saw 2 or 3 Phaetons running around !!! I guess the Phaeton's edge is the AWD system, providing all-weather drivability. Personally, I would never get one (assuming I had the loot for one) because when I had my Jetta, my local VW dealership's service department was run by a group of idiots. They were slow, stupid, and annoying to deal with...I highly doubt that they would be able to repair anything that goes wrong in the Phaeton, considering how much technology/luxury it's packing.

I agree to much MOOOLA for the Brand......It was like when Toyota was trying to sell that super charged Supra for what? almost 70,000 dollars? To much money for the Mark.

I see the Phaeton as stupid cuz there's an Audi A8 in the same class. I haven't been taken for a ride in one, but all the magazines don't seem impressed with its ride quality. Since it's not the "sporty" model, not having a great ride is the ultimate flaw for an upper crust sedan like that.

And the Supra wasn't $70,000. It was only $40,000. Expensive, yes, but not any more than its competitors. And it was twin turbocharged in its last edition.
