More debates with the morons at my school

Once again this stupid ricer kid at my school is trying to prove that he knows more about cars than I do. He says that unless you heel-toe on EVERY downshift you're gonna destroy your clutch. Now, considering that less than 1% of manual drivers on this planet actually know how to heel-toe, it's obviously not "bad" for your car to just downshift and let your RPMs go up by themselves. We own a '96 Volkswagen TDI with 145,000 miles and the clutch hasn't been replaced once, it still runs perfectly fine; no heel-toe has ever been done on that car. I can understand what he means but he's an idiot. Technically, yes, perfectly matching your engine speed to everything will wear out your clutch less, but by such an insignificant amount, even God can't notice. But virtually, no, nothing will wear out if you don't heel-toe. I doubt this kid even know what heel-toe means. Is there some truth to what he's saying, am I really missing something? I feel really dumb posting this.

I hope so. My friend with the M coupe kind of doesn't know a lot about this kind of stuff and he believes that if he doesn't heel-toe on every downshift his clutch is gonna burn out prematurely. I told him it's not true but I don't think he believes me.

Why would the clutch burn out on a downshift, but not when you don't heel toe on an upshift?

Here, read this page. Heel toeing is more about making a smooth shift. It would be the syncros under strain, not the clutch.

[bmwkick] Maybe he didn't like how his car jerks when he shifts, so he loosened up the clutch alot. Now whenever he wants to really get on his car, he start burning the clutch and thinks that all that burning smell is coming from is tires [:D]

This is so obvious! Of course there is no difference between regular down-shifting and heel-toeing. You just have to blip the throttle more on a regular down-shift, but the achieved goal for both is always perfect rev-matching, so it doesn't matter either way !!!
