First of all, the MINI's center gauge is pretty hot. It's just the speedometer, the fuel meter, and the temperature guage (fuel and temp are at the bottom of the speedo). MINI did it to continue the tradition of the car...the purpose of the center speedo is simply so that all the other passengers in the car can see the speedo and can "enjoy" the MINI experience. Also, the tachometer is still above the steering wheel, and if you drive stick shift, your tachometer is #1 gauge, more important than the speedo. If you get the navigation option (which I would get), the speedo gets relocated right next to the tach.
The two reverse gears is true...I read this in a magazine. They said the purpose of the two reverse gears is that you can just engage the 2nd reverse gear and quickly whip into a parking spot (parallel spot). And yeah, as bahnstormer mentioned, there are these weird reverse driving competitions and they the MINI's are popular with those competitions, so this 2nd reverse gear only increases the fun!!
