Autoweek - Radar disables cars

This article was in a recent issue of Autoweek. It talks about a military radar base in England that is so powerful it screws up car and motorcycle electronics. Sets off alarm systems, disables the engines, etc. Some vehicles have to be towed out of the area to restart them!

It says that BMWs are particularly problematic. After reading this, I wonder if some of the computer glitches we experience could be caused by military radar sites, aviation radar, etc.

One of our company pilots told me it is a no-no to activate the plane's weather radar on the ground - there is a concern that a very closeby fueling truck could receive enough energy to cause a spark and go BOOM. Seems like enough energy to glitch a car computer at close range.....

Mmm, I think they are referring to high power, long range radar, usually intended to detect over the horizon attacks - cruise missles, stealth bombers, etc. But isn't it a bit paranoid? Who else besides the US has this type of offensive technology???

This is interesting. We have a problem here locally and officials claim to have no idea what is causing the problem. I think I posted the article earlier this year. What is even more strange and somewhat alarming is that “people” (cant remember who they are) were being called in to see and trace the person(s) responsible as this cannot be determined, but they are certain it is intentional. This seems to mostly affect Fords on the east-side of town but reported to be in the hundreds of vehicles.

RADAR is not "offensive technology." It is used to detect incoming threats, but can do nothing about it. Any country that has an active military uses RADAR.

There was a good long article in the New York Times magazine last weekend on this and other advanced weapon research.

I want one on-board for when SUV's get their fat asses in front of me!

You misunderstood, maybe my post wasn't clear.... "this type of offensive technology" was referring to our cruise missles, stealth bombers, etc. In other words, we are using and building new/additional "Son of Star Wars" high power radar, but what other countries that are a threat have cruise missles, stealth bombers, etc.? Do we need to invest in new high tech radar when the threat it is designed for doesn't exist?
