I might be driving down tomorrow or tuesday to look at and maybe buy that car. It's a very good price for a 535is with only 110k miles - but that's the problem.

http://www.carfax.com/cfm/FSBO.cfm?report=CFX000008121623

It says that there was an inconsistent mileage reading on 8/28/1999 where it went from (12/29/1995) 77,990 miles - to 68,119 miles on , to (09/13/2000) 85,104 miles. Now, I believe it WAS a typo or an error from a mechanic, becuase the car didn't have many miles put on each year. I also find it hard to believe that someone put nearly 17,000 miles on it in 11 months, when the car never had many miles put on each year from any owner. It looks very well maintained, and with a bumper tuck and trim (painted bumpers), it wouldn't look too bad without me buying european bumpers.

Thanks in advance!!

Sounds like a good deal. I figure your right someone made a clercial error. I would like to look under the seat covers. Check the carpet and seat condition when you look at the car. If the mileage is way off and it has more miles than reported you should be able to tell by looking at the wear in the carpet around the pedals, sill plates and seats. If they are excessive ask questions, but at that price it sounds like a great buy either way. By the way the e28 535is are awesome cars and were at one time reported as the closest thing to an "M" car you could get without getting the actual M.

Five dollars [|)]

Thanks big daddy. He said the interior is in excellent condition and hasn't gotten back to me about the condition of the seats without the seat covers. I'm usually turned off by cars with seat covers, becuase there's usually something nasty underneith...but there are people who don't necessarily like the feel of leather, especially the hard sport seats. Even so - the car, if it's in good condition and has had everything listed replaced, it is probably worth more. I could find a set of front seats in good condition for maybe $500 or less.

I guess I'll report back tomorrow [:)]

The first set of pics don't really tell you much but I reckon the car looks a bit tired to me. I mean the gearstick isn't even facing the right way (it's on a strange angle). It just looks like a car that could give you trouble and I understand that E28's - unless they're religiously serviced - can have major electrical problems especially with the engine management.

Don't get me wrong I love the E28 but if you get one you had better make damn sure it's in mint condition otherwise it will plunge you into a world of shit.

??? The shifter is exactly where it should be, the E28's have a weirder throw than e30's.

If you like it, send it to a mechanic. If it checks out, go for it. The price is decent, although you should try to get some more information about the mileage discrepancy, as it could devalue the car. They are very well built, but the parts are not cheap when things go wrong.

I always liked E28s. I almost picked up a 1988 535i back in 1998. I still might get an E28 M5 this summer.

The thing is, most normal mechanic wouldn't know what to look for in older bmw's any better than me - except for the under body stuff.

Yeah I know that but if you look closely you can see that the very top of the gearlever is facing too far in towards the driver. Look at where the gearlever gates are displayed on the top (ie: where it says where 1st, 2nd, 3rd are etc) and you will see what I mean.

By all means check it out but I'm just saying that it's little things like that which can signify how the owner looks after their car.
