I am seriously considering trading in my 2004 530i (fully loaded, minus nav and HUD) for a 1998 740i. Need some unbiased input here. what is the better quality built car. My 530i has 10k miles and the 740i has 110k KM's (66k Miles), The 740 is fully loaded and is extremely sharp lookin..........Am I being stupid in considering this trade (down)?

hmmm, not too familiar with either of those. But you are taking quite a big loss of mileage if you traded in for the 7. Maybe somone else might know enough about these cars to compare them.

You haven't said WHY you are thinking about it...[scratch]

Problems with the 5? The 5 is too small? Hate the looks of the 5 and love the 7?

I'd have to have a VERY compelling reason to trade down like that......

It depends on what you are thinking. I considered getting rid of my car and getting an Accord as a work car (big trade down) and also a Z4, or a used M Roadster, or a vert of some sort (used M3 even). But I am always looking and thinking about car options.

You’ve paid the biggest price depreciation of the vehicle by driving it off the lot. I don’t think the demand for your car will be high considering that someone could buy a NEW one for slightly more. Why trade it and purchase a car that is going to be seven years old? If you ride another two years with your car, and BMW continues the course they’ve been on, the new 7er should be coming out, which will drop the price of the E65 and you can do the same thing while having enjoyed driving a new BMW and taking full advantage of the price depreciation that you have paid. The E38 has impressive looks, but you already have an E60 that looks nice, consider your reasons because it would be an expensive 7er if you decide to trade. Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer but wish we didn't ~ Erica Jong.

Ok....I do really LOVE my car (the 530i) however I test drove this 740i and it is "the lap of Luxery". I know about the depreciation, but that is not really going to effect me any way. List of my 530i new is 53,840 and I bought mine (NEW) for 44, 840.... so I bought car as if it was already depreciated. Germans pay 63,000 euro which is 78,000 dollars approx. Now due to German tax laws I cannot sell my car to a German until I have owned it for 6 months. I wanted to sell it to a German for 50,000 euro and make a nice profit and possibly get the 740i I am polling about for 18,000 euro or invest it into a 545i, maybe I should have broke it down before. The 740i I am looking at looks like the one from the movie The Transporter....way nicer than the pic that is posted.

well, you're not in Europe and pretty sure you can't participate in government/military discount.

What the hell do you have on your 325 again? You have like $5000 more in options than me somehow.

I got everything in the premium package except the wood, so that cost 1000$ more to get everything seperate, then i got sport, HK, xenon, sheepskin seat covers, steptronic,....... think thats it.

When you say it is the one from The Transporter you just mean it's newer, not that it is custom fitted with a 6-speed manual, right?! Because that would be soooo sweet.

the e60 5er is a great car, so is the e39 5er. The e38 7er is awesome too, but I would not trade such a new car. They are going to rape you on the amount on the trade in value. Keep your 5, for a little longer and then consider a trade.

I'm assuming you test drove the 740 right? How do you feel it compares to the 5er? Maybe not as sharp handling?

If it looks anything like this:

Then TRADE! [driving2]
