ok ... a recent post in the e46 section made me think?

what is your personal opinion on K&N's (or any popular performance filter)

and btw this applies to both cold air intake and stock setups

one thing you forgot on your poll

they flow more air, flow more dirt and will cause the MAF to gum up

THere was a flow test that compared all types of filters and flow rates... the K&N flowed MARGINALLY better than the stock paper filters, but flowed LESS when debris was present...

Not to mention that MANY have had their MAF sensor go bad due to the oil that is needed for the K&N filter... 400.00 for the MAF alone!

For the 60.00 that the K&N costs, I would have to go through 4+ paper filters to get the cost of the filter back... so not really SAVING that much in the long run

If you change 15-30k miles... 45-90 k miles to recoup the cost of one K&N ...they recommend cleaning after 50k... so you will need another 20.00 for the oil and cleaner...

Not to mention... have you looked at the K&N after 50k... yuck... clean closer to 25-30

"well the Racing guys use it" ... well they also re-build the motor after 1-3 races as well, so particulate matter is not a factor fr longevity to them

As you can probably see, I do not care for the K&N product

K&N are good in the long run if you want to keep your car forever...you can re-oil and re-use them. Performance is 0-1 HP. Good for high dust areas where you have to clean the filters. Excessive oil on the filter will mess with the MAF or electronics. Also, if you clean them, use a hose spraying from the top down, low flow. I have used several filters. K&N is great for Arizona or sand areas so you can clean and re-oil them. Too much oil causes problems.

Just my 2 cents.[;)]

I've used k & n fliters on my last 3 cars . I like them . I just ordered one for my E46 . I 've heard of a couple people applying to much oil after cleaning and hurting their intakes ..One guy had a cold air intake system and had to take it to his mech to clean all the oil out of his runner ...

My personal opinion is that its mostly the individuals preference : kinda like what oil you use . synth vs. dino . The kinda thing that you like to have or feel good about. Even if its just a 0-1 hp. gain for the k&n . I feel good having it .
