From the BBC:
Blind man sets land speed record

Mike Newman aims to raise awareness of charity Vision 2020

A 43-year-old man has claimed the new world land speed record for the blind.
Mike Newman, from Sale, Greater Manchester, raced to 167.32mph in his specially-made BMW M5 at Elvington Airfield, near York, on Tuesday. Event organisers said the record was set after the average speed was taken from two runs.

Mr Newman hoped to break the 200mph barrier but was thwarted as he ran out of room on the track. He said: "It has been a wonderful day." The record has to be officially confirmed by the Guinness Book of World Records. A father of two, Mr Newman set a record of 144mph in a Jaguar XJ-R in August 2003.

Mr Newman wanted to reach speeds of 200mph

He said: "It has been a really exciting day. Hopefully I have raised awareness ahead of World Sight Day and shown that you can achieve anything you want."

Mr Newman wanted to increase awareness of his chosen charity Vision 2020. John Galloway, who helped organise the record attempt, said: "This is a marvellous achievement.

"Mike drove totally unassisted. It is a fantastic achievement and has been one of the most emotional days of my life."

Probably set up with a bunch of PDC type sensors that tell him when he starts to veer left or right. My guess is that at those speeds that can't be easy.

So what makes him different than 90% of USA drivers? Besides the fact he has an excuse to not see anything thats going on.
He's on an airstrip where he can't kill anyone else.

If that 90% only drove on airstrips, we wouldn't have a problem.

[hihi] Agreed...

The 5-series actually holds the road extremely well, I ( 330) was playing with a 545 today in the rain on a tight curvey onramp to a bridge. I was beside him in the left lane with him on the right, we both took the curve in the 60's in a 25 zone, [:D] although he had the lead the whole time. Can't be too hard to keep it straight in the dry, if you can keep it effortlessly on course in a tight curve in the wet. From a 3 series the new 5 also comes off as a big car...

good for the guy, but i wonder if he feels the same rush as the rest of us. (this didn't impress me much tho..)

i would've thought he'd do it at the salt flats, where there's literally nothing to hit for miles, but an empty airstrip works too. i really wanna take my car to an airfield one day!

Wonder if he has any concept of speed, inertia sure, but speed, since most of us associate speed with how fast things are zipping by us.
Maybe sound noise... It's also possible that he wasn't blind his entire life.
