Looks like Jeep is going to go head to head with the H2.

From AutoCar:

The Hummer H2 will meet with stiff all-American competition when Jeep’s biggest model, the new Commander, arrives Stateside next summer. These are the first pictures of DaimlerChrysler’s huge SUV, snapped as it began hot-weather testing in America’s Death Valley last week.

Although Jeep’s fourth model line will be based on the Rescue concept shown at the Detroit Motor Show at the beginning of the year. It goes on sale in the US from next summer, and will be a further 12 to 18 months later arriving in Europe, putting it in showrooms in late-2006. UK sales in right-hand drive are already confirmed.

Despite its squat, square looks, the Commander is said to be more than 110mm taller than the Grand Cherokee. The US market will get a choice of 254bhp 4.7-litre V8 and 340bhp 5.7-litre Hemi V8 power units, although a diesel will be essential to achieve any sales impact in Europe.

‘The Jeep brand has so much more potential than it is actually using,’ said Michael Castiglione, design manager at the company’s advanced product design centre in California. ‘At both ends of the brand there is room for expansion.’

It has a hemi - which the new hemi's have a power saving technology (which GM also uses on their higher end models) that turn off 2 or 4 of the 8 cylinders -- so it gets better gas mileage on the highway.

Still will only get 20 mpg highway.

I don't think it has the same prestige as a Hummer, which is the main attraction of the H2. The way I see it, people buy the H2 because it looks like they're driving a $100,000 car (the H1) for only $50,000 (the H2). With the Jeep, it will look like they're driving a $20,000 car (the wrangler) in a $50,000(?) car (the Commander). This will lead to rappers not buying them, which in turn means less sales. The only people who might buy it are people that actually off-road with their trucks, which is something like 3%....

I don't think the H2 has any prestige at all. It's just one of those vehicles that screams "Look at me, look at me!!"
If the Commander is actually PRACTICAL on the inside, it might actually be worth getting. Unlike the H2, which is the size of a monster truck on the outside, but only seats 5 (6 with optional seat that takes up half the trunk space) on the inside and doesn't really do anything well except going off-road.
But whenever I see an H2 with 20+ inch rims -which is very common around here- the driver is just a big retard.

Hopefully Jeep will keep the practicality side of their vehicles that got us through many troubled times and not give in to the trends.

Haha, at first glance I thought the picture was of the Commander after it had been in an accident and that it was a joke. ha, oops. Now it just looks like an outdoor walk in refridgerator for restaurants
